What is Katawa Shoujo?
A game designed by four leaf studios. Basically, people from 4chan got together, pieced together ideas, and made a videogame. And it's actually very good. A visual novel of sorts. I'll let the about section explain this!
Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character.
The story is told through the perspective of the main character, using a first person narrative. The game uses a traditional text and sprite-based visual novel model with an ADV text box.
Katawa Shoujo contains adult material, and was created using the Ren'Py scripting system. It is the product of an international team of amateur developers, and is available free of charge under the Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License.
Wait a minute...all of the girls you get to chose from are handicapped?
This kinda cought me off guard at first until I actually started learning more about the characters.
You have Emi Ibarazaki, a young athletic girl who uses prostetic legs and loves to run in marathons. Very hardheaded. Hanako Ikezawa, a burn victim and very shy. Lilly Satou, a blind class representative and also very formal. Rin Tezuka, a girl born with no arms, very misunderstood and loves to paint. Shizune Hakamichi a deaf / mute girl who aims to be the top in class at all costs. And finally Shiina Mikado, Shizune's translator whom suffers from ADHD and OCD
So, it's basically a dating sim?
Well, thats one of the 'gimmics' I suppose. Although the choices you make are minor (You really make about 1-3 choices per chapter. And reading a single chapter can take an hour or so). It's really just reading material and the storyline is actually incredibly well written and enguaging

Granted, this is true. And you have an option to turn off the sexual content. It also does not connect itself with the story. I guess the channers who made this just had to put it in. I guess. And believe me, it goes into grand detail on this stuff. If you are into erotic fiction. I guess this is your thing. But it's not happening every 20 pages. Usually it takes about three hours worth of reading to get to this point. And the visual novel does not shove this down your throat.
Should you pick this up?
I don't see why not. Hell, storyline (as I have praised numerous times) is actually good and it's Free to download
Music is also pretty good. Very good ambiance! Some hilarious scenes! And if you are into that kinda kinky shit then this game is good to go!

This "game" is pretty great, and well written. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Also Rin is my waifu everybody get out.

Some of them are kinda plot-important, though, so skipping them all may not lead to the best experience. I think there's even a bug where one scene is displayed even when the options's set to remove them, so...
The "Bad End" in the first chapter is almost at meme-level on forums, too, so it's definitely worth checking out. The character involved is great in general.
In any case, anyone remember Nanaca Crash? A spiritual successor has been made for KS: Katawa Crash. It's much better than the inspiration, if only for the total chaos and the boatload of references.
