I found these on lazy shell earlier:

Alright, the first set of sprites represents the HOLLOW signs mounted above the doors of the houses of nimbus land. They can also be seen in the V-Jump 95 video, here's a screenshot to prove it:

As for the brair post and the giant pitcher, there is a smaller pitcher in the final version but they were used indoors of nimbus land, the unused giant pitchers were meant to be outside I guess. The brair post might have something to do about the HOLLOW sign. The boquet of flowers were found in the tileset of the ending scene where valentina and booster were getting married, I think they were used as a decoration for somewhere around the church. The belome gargolye only has one pose facing to the righ in the final version, but the one facing left is unused. For the mushroom people, this might take place during bowyers attack on rose town, only the young mushroom people close their eyes in the final version, but we don't see these old people getting stuck as of now.
Hope you like my findings, maybe were close to uncovering the beta nimbus castle i guess.

BTW, i'm trying to look for more beta info on the japanese version of SMRPG, and i'm planing to do it with the vSNES. If anyone who has good experience with vsnes can you give me a tutorial on how to load and play roms and how to extract sprites from it? Thanks.

Another discovery, I think i've found the beta pallet for the beta nimbus castle interior, so I decicded to tinker with it and still couldn't find the beta doors and walls. But how the tables fit perfectly with this pallette just like the screenshot.

Hope to find more soon and please comment.

Ooh, very nice finds!

I don't think the post was used for the sign. The screenshot clearly shows them above the doorways, plus they have a downwards arrow, pointing to the door. The post is most likely just a decoration, meant for a fence or hitching post or coat rack or something. As for the pitcher, it simply could have been a larger version that they decided not to use.

BTW I forgot to add this:

It's supposed to be a shark elbulm that was found in the sunken ship's tiles. I think the graphic was used as a placeholder, and that 30 thing might be a developer's marking.

Yeah, I made mention of those unused palettes a long time ago here, and even came to some of the same conclusions you did.

I noticed the Hollow signs and briar post then as well, but thought that they were some obscure props from the ending that I couldn't remember.

Here's my attempt at reconstructing the palette for the signs:

The post is the perfect size to be used as a perch for Dodo... coincidence, or not?

As for the early Nimbus Castle graphics: I looked through all of the graphics sets in Lazy Shell already, and found nothing. Unless there's an off-chance that they still exist in the ROM, completely unreferenced by any tables, the graphics are probably long gone, just as the ones for Bowser's Keep.

That is why garbled maps exist that use these palettes--they were once the rooms you see in those screenshots. Over time, the graphics and tilemaps were overwritten with data used in newer maps.

EDIT: Another thing I noticed that isn't on the wiki yet:
A few enemies have unused animations.

Already mentioned on the Talk page are Chester's (where the Ameboid pops out) and Muckle/Leuko's attack animations, but Pandorite has one as well. A Monty Mole, an enemy type seen nowhere else in the game, pops out of the box and flails its arms: EDIT: It's used. Somehow, I always manage to defeat Pandorite before it uses that attack.

Lakitu has an animation where it uses an air pump (as seen in the V-Jump 95 video), and one with just its head and hands (Sequences 5 and 8).

Carroboscis has a single-frame animation with its eyes are bugged out and its leaves pointed straight up (Sequence 5). This is used when it falls from the sky in its regular attack.

Maybe there would be more unused sprites in the japanese rom, I mean they changed a few things in there like the file select. So its justa suggestion.

Another discovery, this came from the v-jump video:

As you can see the buzzer once had a pose facing back. But those poses aren't found in the final game.

The thing about the perch is that it has transparency for the top half. Battle backgrounds only use one layer, and no transparent tiles. It would have been somewhere on the regular maps. Perhaps Dodo was meant to appear resting somewhere outside?

Ok, so I found an unused cloud that got replaced by the nimbus clouds.

Hope you like my discoveries so far, you know you can also submit other stuff beta smrpg worthy here too. Just a suggestion.

Sprite Animation 48 is unused. It has all of the standard sequences of a monster (enemy) but there aren't any graphics that. It appears to have two legs (which I've colored orange and rose), a face which would have changed expression (colored white), and something that pops out of the top (colored yellow).

Standing (Sequences 0 and 1)

Hurt (Sequence 2)

Attack (Sequence 3)

Special (Sequence 4).

The animations are actually faster than this in-game--I slowed them down so that the tile numbers can be read more easily.

Additionally, there's a different version of the Mario doll:

Its frames are in Sprite Animation 279, while it graphics are a part of Sprite Image 290 (where the other characters' doll graphics are).

For comparison, here's the one used in the game:

Notice that the unused doll looks more like the Mario model used in the final game, while the used doll looks more like the model seen in early magazine screenshots and the V-Jump presentation. The darker shading/palette in general and the oddly-shaped hat on the back sprite give it away.

There st be more beta scans of SMRPG, but I did find this on ebay:

As pointed in green arrows this magazine has the cover of mario in the beta forest maze, this is because as shown in the v-jump video the bark of the trees were colored blue like in the battlefeild in the final version. But you have to buy it in order to scan it, and I even didn't see a scan of that magazine anywhere. Well, I'll keep looking now.

Very intriguing find, Mattrizzle! I really hope we can find the graphics that match it, if they even still exist.

Found this solid map segment that was hidden in booste's tower. It represents the screenshot next to it.

Nice find! It looks like there's more to it or something, but it's really hard to tell depth with the isometric view.

Feel like making this topic interesting... by adding some remakes of the beta screenshots!

I could do some more if you want.

Big discovery guys, I think I found the structure for bowser's beta castle, still haven't found the tiles for it but i'll keep tinkering and looking.

Also, if there is an extreme way of looking for beta stuff in therom that would be great, even in the japanese rom.
