Don't mean to sound like a SMW Central Hack Mod... but...

Both of those hacks have several instances of cutoff (which is a pet peeve of mine). Try to get rid as much as it as possible.

Quick Question. Is there a way (option in Lunar Magic) to start the camera on the top subscreen? My main entrance is in the top subscreen and when starting the level, the camera has to pan up to Mario. I didn't see an option for it, but maybe there's a selection in the "Change Properties in Header" dialog that does this. Thanks.

In the level entrance properties (and secondary entrance properties), there's an option to set the Layer 1/2 vertical scroll. Change them from 0xC0 to 0x00.

Well then SMW itself should have fixed those instances of cutoff before releasing it. Yes I understand that cutoff has a low priority number on the task list. They could have been busy working on more important things just to get the game done by the deadline and they might have not have had the opportunity to fix the cutoff. But if you have the opportunity to fix cutoff, why not do it?

Don't get me wrong. the level's aren't half bad. It's just something you should put into consideration.

How often did you notice cutoff in SMW when you played it the first time, though?

If it isn't noticeable for players and doesn't provide any noticeable improvement in the game's aesthetic, it's a problem which is a pretty easy candidate for the "won't fix" list.

A lot of the TVs at the time cut off edges, simply due to overscan.

What is even the difference between the two buoyancy options?
Obviously something, but I'm not noticing any performance differences when using either of them. :I

In other news: Thwomps take up much sprite memory. :I

Yes, I think you should space out your sprites a bit more and try to spread out your land features as well. Feels too clustered.

So do ball-and-chain enemies. The main difference between the two buoyancy settings is sprite interaction with layer 2 levels, which probably does make a difference in those levels.

I noticed cutoff when I was a kid, but didn't think much of it. Then again, I played way too many video games for my own good and over analyzed EVERYTHING.

It should be on the "won't fix" list if it's so low on the priority list that the developers can't get to it on time before the final build date. It happens all the time in video games. Hell, maybe the developers themselves didn't even notice it which would be understandable.

I know It's impossible to fix every single error in a game to make the "perfect game". You're always going to miss something, hell 100 beta testers may all miss something. I'm just saying, if you know that the minor error exists and have time, why not fix it? If you only think two people will see it, still fix it. Then you'll have two less people noticing a flaw in the game.

Maybe I'm a perfectionist, but whatever. That's just how I treat my projects.

It's a trade off between how they think it should look, what they want to do with level designs, and how they are able to address individual graphics. They might have known, but to fix it would require too much video memory/tile references or they wiould be too restricted in their level designs or they would have to change the graphics style too much. They picked a compromise in the middle that worked within their limitations, wishes and time frame. My understanding is that super mario world was made under a fairly tight deadline.
