That game looks pretty poor.

It would be a lot better if Bowser didn't glitch in the boss fight. Kind of makes it less appealing.

I like the game over sound effect though. Totally worth watching the video.

Then there's this gem. At least this one looks like SMW! Music's not bad either.

...unfortunately, the same can't be said for this "special" game.

Wow, it's like a weird illegitimate baby of SMW and SML, with the sound of an Atari.

...You know, even though it rips off existing levels, the original segments of those levels are better designed than some rom hacks.

I have that game. I have two versions of it; the complete one, and an unfinished one. The unfinished one has all of the levels (as far as I can tell), but lacks the menus or "Mario Start". It also seems to have a glitch where the top few lines of the screen fill up with bits of the level as you progress.

The camera tends to freak out when I try it on actual computers, but it runs fine in DOSBox.

Here's Tiger Woods playing it.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I had a similar game on a shareware CD when I was younger. I forget what it was called and whatnot but it was more similar to SMB and SMB3, had VGA mode graphics and I believe sound blaster audio.

Wow, aside from the Atari 2600 sound engine and nonexistent ending, that looks rather well made. It actually has a lot of the subtle effects from real Mario games, like the bounce sprites and running over small gaps. It's like they had a professional team at one point, but just one guy left developing it by the end, who had no idea how to get the sound working or make an actual ending... I wouldn't be surprised to find actual music and sound effects in that game somewhere, just disabled...

Paulguy's Post configuration
They probably either had the game configured wrong, or whatever they ran it in configured wrong. Though there is a chance the game just has pc speaker support only.

Might as well disambiguate the Mega Drive ones while I get the chance

There are three known Mario unlicensed works on the Mega Drive. In order of the posted videos:
Super Mario World - based on another unlicensed game called Squirrel King
Super Mario World 64 - this is the SMW one that also steals music from TaleSpin. THis one's a bit notorious because the way the hardware is built apparently "ripping the ROM chips out" is out of the question because then we'd have to guess pins (assuming we can get rid of the epoxy cleanly)... and every other attempt to dump it has failed. I still say we need to rip the ROM chips off but the rarity of this one might make this a task that isn't for the faint of heart. I don't remember the exact situation but it's on ASSEMbler somewhere
not posted: Super Mario Bros 2 1998 (Super 1998 Mario 2?) - this one plays like the original Mario (is it exactly that?) and the one Sonic Jam 6/Super 1998 Sonic 6 is based on

We have basic information on all of that at Sega Retro and I'm sure other sites have more detailed information. It's been a while since I looked through all the MD unlicensed games... (isn't there a fourth Mario one?)

Well, the CPU has to be able to read it somehow. Some pirate carts had simple "protection" systems where the boot code had to send some voodoo signal to unlock the rest of the ROM. It's just a matter of examining the code to figure out that unlock signal and then dumping the rest from there.
