| This is somewhat of a rant, so you know what you're getting yourself into. Also a wall of text. You have been warned.
I created two ROM Hacks called Pokemon Brown and Pokemon Prism, both have had incomplete versions released to the public. Something to bide the time while people wait for the final version. The problem here is, people download these ROM Hacks, upload them to wherever the hell they want and it becomes impossible to contact some of these people and explain to them that there's a newer version out and to either get them to remove it, or update it explaining where you can always find the latest version. So I've made maybe, the "mistake" of releasing these things when they weren't fully done. People are still playing the 2008 version of Prism on youtube and complaining about things I've already put into consideration and fixed in a public version. Hell, people here and there are finding the 2004 version of Brown which is almost a decade old. I am not blaming the people downloading the ROM hacks off of these websites. They see a list of ROMs and think "Pokemon Prism might be cool", and download it. I've contacted ROM sites who were hosting my hack. Some of them understood and removed the ROM after I asked them too. However there are certain sites that are just impossible. Example is Doperoms. The person in charge of that site, politely stating, is a complete moron. I sent him a polite email about a half a year ago linking to my outdated ROM Hacks and asked if he could remove them. He told me and told me that the ROMS were not downloadable, which I quickly found out was a lie because I downloaded it right after I read his message. He then stopped responding to me I tried to contact him two other times (latest was about 2 weeks ago). I guess he might have blocked my email, but the site policy reads: "If there are any developers that do not wish their games to be listed in the database, please send an email, and they will be promptly removed." Which he failed to uphold and makes me believe he does this not only to ROM hackers, but people who actually developed real games that are being hosted on that site. To make matters worse about this site, is I see people playing the 2008 version on Youtube (I do a serach for my ROM Hacks on youtube every 2-3 weeks). I send them messages asking where they got the ROM and they told me: Doperoms. Like I said, I'm not blaming the people downloading it from these sites, but when people download it and think that's all your ROM hack has to offer (The ROMS dont even come with the readmes I made for releases as well), it's disappointing knowing that they could have played a much better hack if the people in charge of the site would just listen. It's not like Brown and Prism are the most popular ROMs on the site or anything (and I'm sure it's VERY far from it), so it puzzles me why he would be so resistant to remove or even, UPDATE with a better version? I know it's probably not as big of a deal as say, someone selling your ROM Hack (Someone did that to Prism and another to Brown but they were both resolved). But it's just frustrating. What do you think? Should we just stop releasing "Betas" and release it only when it's done? tl;dr version: People host our ROM hacks and don't keep track with the latest versions. People continue downloading the old versions not knowing that a better version is out and I cannot cooperate with the people in charge of the ROM hosting websites to either remove or even update the old versions on several ROM hosting websites. It's frustrating. |
