Just gonna say, DarkKobold called us terrorists.

Been a while since we were called that

But no seriously, not being able to recognize an injoke when you see one is pretty bad, even if it's not your community.

So, having opinions about websites somehow makes you a member of Al Qaeda now?

Bravo, TASv, you've really outderped yourselves now.

What I love the most about that thread is that Inuyasha is being completely and totally civil, and DarkKobold is going out of his way to be as insulting as possible. He's also apparently reading this "circlejerk."

Hey, DarkKobold? You're bad at your job. Seriously. By conflating Inu with Xk, you've managed to place an ENTIRE AGENDA on someone's shoulders that wasn't related to him, at all. Now that you've been corrected on that front... you *continue* to personally attack him in the thread when all he's doing is conducting himself with respect and dignity. For every legitimate question he raises about the judging criteria, you spit out words like "circlejerk" and "Fox News." You are, literally, the worst forum moderator I've ever seen.

To put it in language you'll understand, seeing how you treat your forumgoers: Goddamn it, you're a fucking idiot.

Time to log in on a several-year-old TASvideos account and get it banned by cross-posting~

Guy must be running out of ammo if he's calling us terrorists.

If he's going to be that bad at airing his grievances, then he should just sit down, pipe it, and let someone else handle business, because it's plain to see that whatever he's doing is so totally not working.

Probably because the insinuation due to said staffer is so stupid that Firefox realizes it and doesn't even bother to recognize how awful it is.

I do find it interesting to see just how fast they can be made, which in some cases can boil down to improvements of a single frame. They're not really more entertaining to watch than the previous run, but they set a new record for fastest possible completion.

Rejecting a run just because it could, potentially, be improved, is just stupid. With that logic, they should reject everything, except possibly the current fastest SMB run?

I do too, I mean, I see the point and I understand the competition aspect and the interest in seeing how fast one can make it, but when there's just a few frames each time saved without much of a visible trick, it leaves me feeling dissatisfied somewhat. It's like "Alright, I just watched the same run for the third time...?" It's just how I feel solely from a viewer's point of view.

Well, I wouldn't bother to actually watch a one-frame improvement... Just seeing that it's been done.

Paulguy's Post configuration
So does their system only allow like 1 run per game or something, and that has to be the best one? It'd make sense that they could have like, the "best" one, then have other notable ones that are just amusing for some reason, like those family feud ones where people put in complete nonsense. I'm sure similarly amusing things apply to other games. Also it would make sense to have different methods too. Like, completely humanly possible runs, TAS runs without exploits and TAS runs with exploits, or TAS runs that only use certain exploits. Like, sure, people can beat super mario 64 with getting like no stars, but someone might want to see an all stars run or minimum stars required to beat it legitimately or something.

Honestly, I'm just curious because I'm not involved in the community and I'd rather not bother because it's not really a great area of interest other than watching them sometimes.

I feel this thread makes some good points, but it seems like it never really well defines it's intention as I understand it. It just seems like a lot of vitriol from both sides, and someone looking in, or even someone involved with less than good understanding of social situations (Something that strikes me as may be a common problem in a TAS community.) would completely misunderstand the intent, or just go on the defensive.

I think you make a good point about this thread being unclear, so I wrote a giant summary post. Oh well.

So there's basically a few points rolled up into this one thread.

Point the first: The TASVideos administration was too hasty in declaring Bizhawk the preferred emulator for TAS runs. In its current state it is clearly inferior to existing emulators. The staff now seem to have tacitly admitted that this is correct, so this thread is no longer discussing this point.

Point the second: The TASVideos administration deletes threads, deletes posts, and bans users for terrible reasons, such as disagreeing with individuals' opinions. This creates dissatisfaction among people who want to discuss TAS and also have opinions. It's unclear at this time whether or not the staff are willing to reform their behavior, but Inuyasha was unbanned, which is nice.

Point the fourth: The judging criteria for new videos look, to outside observers, a bit too strict. The example under consideration is the Sonic 2 PERFECT BONUS run, which was rejected because it didn't look superhuman enough and because several forum posters did not like the goals. 63% looks like a lot of 'yes' votes and the movie had high entertainment value, so it feels bad when it's not accepted. The judge who rejected the run did defend his decision (The judge is Nach, his post is halfway down the page, apparently you can't link to individual posts in phpBB forums?) and although I still disagree with him I at least understand where he's coming from. I do feel that the system is unfair to run authors who do not speak English well, because they have difficulty defending their decisions adequately, but I'm not sure what a good solution would be.

Also, if I may be so frank, a few participants in this cross-forum discussion (myself included) have been more rude than necessary. Just like a few members of Jul having an extreme opinion does not reflect upon the others, one awful moderator (if there even is one! I haven't been paying enough attention to the state of the forums as a whole to make that kind of judgment!) doesn't condemn the entire TASVideos staff.

Having actually finally cared enough about this issue to read the entire thread I linked to in point 4, I actually do feel a little misled by the posts here comparing the Sonic 2 run to the Zanac one. I'm glad Inuyasha posted a correction. There's very little evidence to suggest that the judges are biased for or against any TAS authors.

adelikat was a judge long before he was an admin, if I recall correctly. So don't be too surprised.

The two staff members who are arguably the most terrible are adelikat and DarkKobold. Given that they are primarily the two owners of the site (Nach being a third admin iirc, not sure if there are others) their actions reflect pretty poorly. Hardly moderators.

I don't see why people still care about that site. I decided to check it out and found loads of the people had been using cheats and exploits. TASvideos doesn't seem to be about truly winning a game, just about getting to the end. So don't expect anything good now you know that.

Err, I suggest reading this to understand what a TAS is.

Its funny they say they want them to be entertaining. To me looking at a mess of cheats and exploits to 'win' a game in 6 minutes is not entertaining.

I dunno.

It depends on the run really. Fighting games are boring as shit to watch on TASVideos since they rarely mess around or let the opponent win for entertainment.

I personally enjoy runs where the game gets broken to shit because some glitches are hilarious. You haven't seen a TAS until you see someone beat Bowser with no stars in SM64, or someone beat Harmony of Dissonance in 12 seconds.

The point of a TAS isn't "winning", it's showing near-impossible things.

It's like claiming game genie corruption to be cheating.

At first I was just going to call you silly, but I'll expand on it:

The point of a TAS is to show off what a human can not do, but is technically possible without cheating. Many games will react in strange ways with frame perfect input.

Any of the movies that you see on the site are all possible* on a real system.

If you don't personally care for that type of movie, fine. Just don't insult it and put it in a box called stupid, understand that they are a thing that some people like.

http://speeddemosarchive.com/ may be something more to your tastes. They are played by a real person in real time.

* Maybe some may still have emulator oddities, but they usually check edge cases (like Pokemon Yellow Save Corruption)
