http://www.nintendoplayer.com/site-updates/first-look-at-historic-mario-nes-prototype-find/

Nintendo Player has just obtained an historic Mario prototype for the NES. While we’re still checking the game for changes, we can say for sure that in its current state the game is nearly unplayable.
Nintendo has a strict policy when it comes to their prototypes. For that reason, few true betas from the Mario series exist outside of Nintendo’s headquarters.
This cartridge is, to our knowledge, the only copy in private hands and has never been seen by the general public before. Again, and we cannot stress this enough, our Mario NES prototype is nothing if not historical.
Please try to stay patient with us while we continue to search through the game code and prep the article. Check back early next month, when all will be revealed.

This can be over 9000!

First, the actual link is http://www.nintendoplayer.com/site-updates/first-look-at-historic-mario-nes-prototype-find/.

Second, I'm honestly calling bullshit.

An official prototype made from a gutted, cut-up, taped-together NES cartridge? Seems legit.

Any particular reason you are calling BS? I'm just curious. I'm slightly skeptical myself. I mean if you really wanted to find differences between a prototype and a final version, you would release it into the community. With a prototype like that, there would be hackers who would drop everything to start dissecting the prototype. That is just my take on it though...

I guess I can dissect it, I guess.

First, it's on a NES case. A Mario game, developed overseas, would likely be in a Famicom case or otherwise loose, not in a taped-up cart*. (Besides, I don't know about you, but I doubt the tape would've lasted that long, it looks new)

Second, the actual post:

Nintendo Player has just obtained an historic Mario prototype for the NES. While we’re still checking the game for changes, we can say for sure that in its current state the game is nearly unplayable.

"Nearly unplayable". So clearly they know what game it is (there are not a whole lot of Mario games on the NES that are at all similar to each other).

But notice that they actually never name the game.

So much effort spent on gloating about how big and important it is (but yet without actually revealing anything).

Please try to stay patient with us while we continue to search through the game code and prep the article. Check back early next month, when all will be revealed.

First, the obvious "check back next month!" crap. Second, well, guess what else happens to be early next month.

On second thought I'm not just calling bullshit, I'm 100% confident this is an early (and very, very lame) AF joke thought up by some brain-dead person.

(* There were a few Mario NES games made in the West, like Mario is Missing, if I remember.)

Well, if it's real, either the image is a placeholder or the game's a FC board on a 60-to-72 adaptor.

Either way, I'm putting it on the Skeptic Watchlist with a priority level of "Ancient Aliens".

I have to agree with Xkeeper. He pretty much nailed how that guy is so full of it.

I also love how the guy writing the article seems to blissfully forget how those chips can be overwritten/replaced.

Pretty sure this is a fake; all the evidence points to it.

Even if it was legit, this guy to my knowledge doesn't release anything, so it'd hardly be worth getting excited about.

Even with that, it can still be quite ambiguous what he means. But if that was a joke, man, did that go way over my head.

If it is a prototype of Mario's Time Machine, I'm not too surprised, now, but it's not exactly one I'd be excited over. I do realize that first-party prototypes are rare, but the game was developed by Software Toolworks. So, I'm not sure what to expect, especially since it's an edutainment game.

Oh man, I hope so. That thing's been passed around for so long, and nobody somehow has thought to dump the ROM.

Cloud dreaming, man.

I figured it was bullshit as soon as I saw the cartridge. A prototype Mario game using an unmarked NES (not Famicom) cartridge that's unplayable, but somehow they figured out it was a Mario game? Come on.

Or Mario is Missing, both of which do require some geographic/history knowledge

That doesn't make it any less of a joke, though.

Avast had a shitfit about downloaders and potentially malicious scripts over that link.

Yeah, the site seems to have been hit by the worm going around lately. I sent an email to the owner, hopefully he'll get it fixed.
