So I was able to convince the wife to let me finally get an iPad. The retina display sold me on taking the plunge. Also the dictation feature is very nice. I'm using it right now, actually. The screen really is incredible. I'm a stickler for visual clarity, and this one is definitely the best.

The iPad 3 is pretty much made for first-time owners. It's like the same speed as the 2 because it has to push all those extra pixels, but frankly it's a fantastic device. However, we're still at the point where a lot of people have to find a use for a tablet before really using it much; I tend to run games (I recommend Galaxy on Fire 2 HD or either Infinity Blade), GarageBand (as a music notepad; extremely handy), Colloquy, Netflix, and YouTube the most. Basically the thing replaced all the need I would have had for a laptop. I wish the iPad 2 had dictation though.

Even with the increased resolution, it is more powerful for heavy 3D games. I think once more games take advantage of the quad core graphics chip, you'll see it outshine the iPad 2. But the 2 is still an excellent device. Having this makes me want to get back into photography. I still have a $5 credit in iTunes right now. Deciding if I want to get iPhoto or a new game.

I was considering buying one, but dropping $500 in one shot on something like this is a bit of a turn-off. Especially if I don't have a real reason to have it other than the awesome factor.

Tablets look nice, and for normal users I'm sure they are quite great. But for someone like me, it lacks a true keyboard and other things which I need to be productive with a computer.

Still, I can say they engineer these things quite well.

Someday I hope to have the spare cash to plop down on a tablet that isn't Apple or Samsung. Unfortunately they seem to be the only ones making tablets that don't have stupid aspect ratios.
