I was just reading this old thread, and there was something Emuz said that caught my eye:

Also if you've ever done any volunteer work, or worked on a project online with some people (depending on what it was) you can use to show you gave back with your time. They often look for stuff like that.

I've been looking for ways to make my resume stand out somehow, and an online team project sounds interesting. So I want to ask everyone: What sort of projects would be good to think about? I imagine I'd go for something programming oriented, but I don't have any clear direction yet. I'd like to hear what you guys would do.

Contribute to open source stuff? I guess. I don't know. I haven't done much of anything on that front.

Definitely this. I remember reading several people saying that if you want to get good at programming/art/music, contribute to open-source stuff. You can then take that experience for your resume and learn good programming/art/music practices from other people. As long as the evidence is there, it'll go great lengths to helping you.

I think both could work good. Open source stuff is great, and if you want to work for a programming team someday, a team project would definitely be a great assist too.
