The thumbnail is the picture of Alienware X51, which rumors spread that the Steam Box could be using with modifications.

Thoughts on this?

My thoughts? I'm pretty excited.

This could be really awesome, if they do it right!

So we're just thinking along the lines of a standardized PC spec setup here, no?

Need to see more before I'd start getting excited... I know it's Valve (yay!) but this isn't the first time someone's thought up this idea.

It's interesting, but someone like me is more likely to just buy a regular laptop and customize it, or just put that money into upgrading the heck out of my home rig.

It's a nice idea, though.

Something tells me this'll be a lot like a Kindle Fire. I dunno, a low price might be enticing, but I really don't like the trade-off. It's much better to spend a bit more on a system that doesn't transmit everything you do somewhere, and limit you to a specific market. And the biometric stuff just sounds creepy.

Anyone remember the Fragbox?

It was basically a computer the size of a gamecube. Incredibly overpriced and only people with too much money bought this product. This is that product.

Holy shit they are still in the market

The thing that Valve is making is basically that. A Fragbox. Their version might be cheaper but it's a console size and people are going to eat this up like it's nothing.

I mean; it's too early to say anything right now. But if it's going to cost the same as a normal computer than there aint no way in hell I will be getting this. My PC runs good enough as it is.

You're comparing a premade "gaming PC" that is mostly stock hardware and software to a probably subsidized computer. It might impose limitations, or only allow "trusted" (Steam) software to run or it might come preloaded with monitoring software for marketing research, or collect statistics on what games users play and how much they play it. That's the tradeoff of a console, generally. Cheap but you lose all your rights. People will go very very far with what they're willing to give up for convenience (Apple), other people do it (Apple, basically any popular game/music/movie franchise) or to save a buck (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony).

While I'm definitely too conksuck poor to even consider getting a Steam box anyway, the design is still pretty kickass.

Valve has the business sense to make it work, but it's not something super-desirable to me.

Hm, that's a pretty awesome thing. I don't think I'll buy it, though, as PS3 is really good enough for me to last me a while.

However, in the future, I MIGHT buy it. Who knows. I hope it's good, and not a rip off or something.

Also this. They have the business model to not only have regular commercial games for download, but indie games from people and companies no one has even heard of, but turn out to be amazing. Hell, Steam might be so confident in their profits that if they announce this and set a price, that it's going to be significantly lower than what we believe it's going to be. $500 might be a reasonable price. Maybe even $400. Not to mention that if this is going to be a real system, then they'll be buying parts from Alienware in bulk and possibly way cheaper than retail.

It might not be successful, but think of having a 4th console to choose from. Even if it's not successful it'll still slap Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo in the head with its approach (not that it already has to an extent, just... more so)

I think there is a enough consoles, also SteamBox sounds too similar like Xbox and also looks similar with the Black console with Green. It does sound interesting though since i would like to become an indie developer one day and this could be useful to getting unknown games out there. But personally i don't see why they need their own console, i think its just greed on thier part.

I'm interested, having a Steam Console could probably shake things up a little, and with some luck it could really re-vitalize Digital Distrubtion for consoles, which is slightly lacking at times.

But for me personally it seems rather useless, I already have a computer for my computer games, and will keep using it.

Interesting, but not for me.

Steam on the PC needs internet in order to function. (Offline mode still needs internet. ._.) Which is something that I don't desire for a console. Furthermore, the reason I own a wii is due to the exclusive games that are on it, unless Valve can seal some good exclusive deals then I'm not seeing this take off at all.

Also, I was kinda hoping we would, you know, move away from consoles all together and just use PC for everything. I mean, you can very easy hook one up to the TV and plug in a gamepad. ;

I totally agree, I sometimes use the computer to play N64 games using an Xbox 360 controller (my friends) which is awesome. You can connect Wii Remotes and even the sensor to a computer and use one as a wii so i don't see the point in individual consoles. It would be useful in th long run since their is games on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 i would like but i cannot get both consoles.

It's actually a bug that gets fixed and then unfixed with annoying regularity. Offline mode will work extremely well if you go 'start in offline mode' though...doesn't work very well if you just lose internet connectivity.

hah Steam itself already has a bunch of exclusives

they just don't flaunt them around

also I don't think valve would be silly enough
to just release an overpriced 'console' gaming computer

especially if it's directly tied into the steam service,

they might be able to offset some of the price and make it fairly cheap

that would be pretty cool

even more so if they get that
controller to have some uniform support

Considering that Valve basically said that they weren't fond of this exact model, I wouldn't buy into it too much. We'll see.

Just hearing this makes me even more excited for this possible system. I know I'm repeating myself, but even if this console is real, yet still fails, it'll still change the habits of the big three for the long run.
