Well, bfm we will always remember how the windows 9x series stayed true to being unfaithfull to us when we are at home or in a small business office at 2pm cringing in pain on why windows wont stay stable for too long.
I hope that anyone has never had to deal with this personally also there is a cpu error message that windows 98se and windows me on a rare occassion when the cpu is actually malfunctioning.
I guess once you get use to the errors and finding a way to correct it over time its not much of a problem.
Anyone new to the computer markets and dont know why their os is erroring out on them and scared almost blind to death I feel bad for, even when its not their fault.

| I keep reading that the Consumer Preview is supposed to come out sometime this month but no news on it really. It's been kept pretty damn quiet, minus the screenshot leaks. But even Apple couldn't fully prevent image leaks. |

I'll be honest with this, but I am not all that keen for a new os soon, I think the last 300.00 I spent on professional and ultimate in 2 years for me and my family is enough.
If push comes to shove, I'll do what I did like awhile back , and take out the core that activates 7 and rebuild the os, laugh and keep on going with my day job.
Plus I should be fully migrated into suse by late summer this year.
Last MS OS I'm buying again.

Okay, so the Consumer Preview was released yesterday!
So far I've read that the Metro UI is pretty odd to work with a mouse (but that could be because of some odd scrolling bugs) but otherwise the OS itself is nice and speedy (though that's to be expected considering it's a fresh, clean install.)
I'll probably install it on my laptop this weekend, we'll see how that goes.

| Yeah I got it as soon as I could. It's surprisingly better than the Developer Preview. I'm using it right now. There are some strange quirks like IE10 not being able to watch WebM videos, but other than that everything else has gone pretty well. Skyrim runs great. |

Been running the Consumer Preview in a virtual machine (in VirtualBox). It's pretty crashy, nothing terribly unexpected when running in a suboptimal virtual environment and with beta software but ... good grief. Anyone who wants to use a mouse and keyboard with their computer is going to learn to hate the Start screen and the so-called "hot corners" fast. Cut the Rope wouldn't even launch for some reason even though that pipe game (forget the name) worked fine and other animations and Aero worked as well. I also had some trouble getting IE10 to launch in desktop mode.
In addition, a lot of things still haven't been made touch-friendly (like the task manager which only runs in desktop mode -- though they'll probably make a metro version for the final ... maybe) and the two environments are way, way too separate. It's clunky and counterintuitive.
Also, you'll want to find an alternative shell since Explorer windows have been ribbonized (the ribbon thankfully is minimized by default, but it's still not a replacement for a good old easy-to-use toolbar.)
W8 for W9.

The problem with this: Some netbook users are fucked over. Amusingly, I was curious about Metro because I thought it'd make a decent netbook interface. (Unless they've changed the minimum res to 1024x600, instead of 1024x768.)

I was running at 1280x800; you'd think that would be enough. :/
My guess is that it wanted some esoteric acceleration that isn't supported by the virtualbox video thinger.

I'm gonna attribute all the issues you're having to the VM.
Somehow I doubt the VM is causing the counteerintuitive and clunky interfaces and the ribbonized Explorer windows. :p

I threw it on the laptop a couple weeks ago, aside from the Start screen, I don't mind it. The added speed is a plus, but that's just because it's not a 4-year-old install of Windows. 
The Start screen sucks, but I might get a bit more use out of it once more apps have useful functionality with the Metro UI. None of the apps really work right.
Internet Explorer (which is a write off)
Movies (which will play avi files half of the time? Might be something to do with filesize. It works with TV episodes, not with movies. No mkv support either, but I don't know what WMP supports natively anymore.)
Mail (which throws up an error message when I try to connect my Gmail account)
Pictures (I couldn't find a way to add files from my computer. Facebook worked, kind of..)
Xbox Live (no support in Canada, so useless for me)
Music (also not supported in Canada)
People/Chat (everything is HUGE BOXES for social networking, and the chat is limited to Windows Live and Facebook. Plus I have no idea where any of the settings are)
The all applications/search screen is pretty usable though, nice and easy to get to.
Other niggles:
The only way (that I found) to get to a Metro version of the Control Panel is to try and change your Account picture?
Tons of keyboard shortcuts. TONS.
I have Chrome set as the default browser, but sometimes links will still open in IE.
Otherwise, I don't mind the ribbon-ized Explorer, and I'm just enjoying the slight boost in speed on my old laptop.

I'm sure you can get a codec pack for Windows media player for it to play loads of different kinds of files. On its own though it is pretty rubbish.

Microsoft wants Windows developers to write Windows 8-specific, Metro-style, touch-friendly applications, and to make sure that they crank these apps out, the company has decided that Visual Studio 11 Express, the free-to-use version of its integrated development environment, can produce nothing else.
This is totally a great idea that won't backfire in MS's face at all.
Just to make doubly sure that nobody will dare try to produce desktop applications without paying Redmond for the privilege, Microsoft has gone a step further than crippling Visual Studio Express. [... T]he Windows SDK for windows 8 will not include a compiler toolchain at all, lest any sneaky developers try to cheat the system and use it to write desktop apps.
