Nintendo has yet to show me that killer app it needs for its 3DS handheld. An actual Metroid game could be it. You've all heard me go on and on and on about Metroid Dread and how much I want it. And even if that's not the actual name for it, I do hope to hear some kind of announcement concerning Metroid V this year. Its now or never Nintendo. It is the 25th Anniversary of your most overlooked franchise. What you going to do?
Your opinions on this, it has been talked about or rumored for too long since the end of Metroid fusion and Metroid prime 3 corruption.
Do you think, Nintendo may surprise us with it at the holiday season of 2012 ?
Or is this really a dead project nintendo has really given up on after working on it for a short amount of time ?
Yes, but it is rumored and might not have the name anymore but nintendo is working on something.
They're doing a wonderfull job at shutting their mouth on new current titles that may launch. Keep the thread up just in case any real leaks of it may happen by late of May 2012 or summer 2012.

What is there even to talk about? Nobody ever said it was being developed, or that "Metroid Dread" was even a game title. In fact, the references to it in Prime 3 were removed from the PAL version so that more people wouldn't think it was a clue about an in-development game.

After recent Zeldas and the disaster that was Other M, I have no hope for any future Metroid games being worth the asking price unless Nintendo pulls a rabbit out of its hat (and their heads out of their collective asses), and gets a better development studio than Team Ninja to work on the thing. Whether Dread is a real thing in progress or not, I have no intention of grabbing it unless it's basically the most amazing game ever made at this point.
Nintendo, you have to compete with iOS and Android now: make yourself relevant again by producing some quality software.
Other M was a one-time thing, a special developer studio crossover, an adventure. Although I enjoyed it, it wasn't the pure Metroid experience fans/critics seem to want, and I don't see another one of it's kind coming.
Considering the recent love for classic Metroid, with the original, Metroid II, and Fusion all being made available, I wouldn't be surprised if they at least had some plans for a more traditional game in the works. Just keep in mind that it takes several years for a game to be developed.

Other M wasn't a bad game, it was a bad story, which you can't blame team ninja for.
iirc, they mostly did art/programming and not much of the design. That was all on Nintendo's side of things. Still, I do hope for a more metroidvaniaey game this next go around now that Nintendo seems to want to play it safe with stuff.
Or just let Retro Studios make the next one. They're good at metroid, I'm sure they could make an awesome 2D one.

I'm pretty sure Retro is done with Metroid. They've already made four Metroid Prime games, and I'm pretty sure they said they didn't want to only ever be doing Metroid. (Hence, DKCR.) Still, if they did, I'd certainly welcome it. Metroid Returns, anyone?
The story for Other M wasn't really bad. I can see where some people might not have liked the presentation of it or the portrayal of Samus, but the plot itself was good. Shady activity within the Galactic Federation and the backstory of Samus fit right in with story of Fusion and the official mangas.

No, really, it was a bad game. I can name several from the top of my head, such as:
Being locked in a first person view looking for something really small, often not making any sense at all. (And this happen WAY too often.)
Bad means of which to tell the story, making it more confusing and weird then it actually is.
The energy re-fill function is very bad for this type of game. I'm not saying that as a metroid game, but rather, based on the gameplay itself.
The first person switch thingy getting in the way rather then helping. (It could have been good, if you could possibly move?) Regardless, it really makes little sense in a third person action/platforming game.
Of course, as always, YMMV. But I personally think the reasons I have listed alone should point towards bad design choices that hurts the game. IMO Other M is decent as best. But as a long time metroid fan, it really hurts for me what they decided to do with the series.
As for metroid "V" or, "dread" well...
It's just a rumour, and will remain as one until a sequel to fusion comes out. (In a sense, Other M was that though...)
I'm not a big fan of the latest two metroid games that have been released, so I hope they will take some time and think over how to go forward with the series. That's what they did during the N64 era, and you see where that went? Metroid prime (1) and metroid fusion where both amazing games.

Considering Other M's original design (before Team Ninja got involved) was a rail shooter, Team Ninja did a great job on it!
...Still one of the worst in the series (alongside Fusion and Echoes; can you guess what the thing I hate most in a Metroid game is?), but could have been so much worse.

Intelligent boss design?
Seriously, Fusion is one of the greatest in the series. Other M? I still haven't played it yet.
I'm guessing he meant "evil Samus clones". She does seem to have a habit of inadvertently creating them.
@Xenesis: As long as you don't go into it expecting something that follows the classic Metroid formula 100%, I think you'd enjoy it. It's basically a combination of Fusion and Prime 3: Corruption, both in terms of theme and the way in which you interact with people, as well as gameplay. If you've ever wanted a Metroid movie, this is probably the closest we'll ever get to one. But again, just don't go in expecting the exact same play style. After all, the very first words in the teaser trailer were "Nintendo x Team Ninja".

I highly encourage you to buy it, also even with the movie scenes nintendo added on other m, there is a hard mode without that movie feel to it.
Also there is a 2 hour movie to watch, if you can beat it and get 100%.
If you do get it, be the judge yourself and cross reference with fusion, other m explains what samus was talking about halfway through her mission in fusion and the events that occured in fusion.
Between Metroid prime 2- other m, you will get a kick out of it, once you play it again the second time.
When Nintendo released it last in 2010 august 31st, newegg had my pre-order banging on my door the next day with my 1055T hexa-core build parts.
I've always thought a Metroid game by the likes of Valve would be pretty awesome. To me, it'd sorta be like HL1. Sorta like my idea:
This starts a differing timeline/reboot. It starts with her in a holding cell, caught by the G.F. for illegal bounty hunting. Something goes wrong, Samus goes through as the ship/base/whatever goes into a chaotic mess, recovers her suit, and the game is her fight to escape to her impounded ship to get out of the collapsing place. Her past, of course, is gradually revealed on the way, along with weaponry and trapped personel.

Damn it ReconKP9000!, sorry but I have seen that picture on a few forums, so thats a old image for about a year now or so.
I hope I am really wrong about this, but if nintendo does metroid prime 3 on the 3ds, I am not buying it.
I already have a copy on the wii and thats enough for me!

The bosses are pretty much the one redeeming factor in both Fusion and Other M. In fact, Other M has not one but two boss fights with which are pretty amazing, as well as probably the most exciting 3D Ridley fight (if this is a spoiler to you, you haven't been playing the series).
The thing I hate is, of course, locked doors. "Samus go here" says the Luminoth, and locks all the doors elsewhere. "Samus go here" says the computer, and locks all the doors elsewhere. "Samus go here" says Adam, and locks all the doors elsewhere. What happened to blocking doors by making you need power ups?
It wasn't AS bad in echoes as it was in Fusion really. Towards the end of the game, you really were only locked by powerups, needing to get the anhilliator beam, the spider ball, etc.
It WAS weird though, having all these separate dungeons that are locked until you reach a point in the plot (kinda like having multiple tourians I guess). It would be cool to have one big world again.
