woah woah woah
game developers shouldn't be able to sell a game that they made
without constantly creating new free content at absolutely no charge
that would just be unethical

If we could harvest sarcasm from your post as energy, I could heat my house for a month for free.
I don't want Terraria to be open-sourced. If it were, we'd have millions of NotTerrarias running around like the mass of shittily-made 2D Minecraft fangames that totally aren't Minecraft fangames even though they ripped the default Minecraft texture pack for sprites.

If that reply was intended for me, then I'll merely say that there are some things not meant to be open-sourced.
Regardless of who that was intended for, then I shall redirect you to an adage about arguing on the internet and the Special Olympics.
There are better game dev arses to kiss anyways. Like those which are producing Half-Life 2 Episode 3.

Part of me is glad it's not open source, part of me isn't.
Needless to say though, I'm sad they have stopped working on it :/

lol Awesome pic. Anyways, can I join in on the fun?
No one is paying a subscription fee for this game. We all payed $10 or less for this game. We got tons of hours of fun out of it. Transaction complete. Is that not how this works?
The developers want and SHOULD move on to other things now that their job is done. Thats how we get new games...by developers you know...moving on to MAKE these new games. Is that not how this works?
No one is entitled to shit, and I have no clue why anyone would be upset about anything the developers have done. The game rocked and you can still play the game for as long as you want.

I still want to them to:
A. Fix the bug where santa keeps spawning and dying.
B. Fix boss spawner items so the bosses actually come.
C. That one wall of flesh bug which makes him go berserk and charge up the celling.
I'm all fine with them wanting to move on, but I expect a (mostly) bug free game.

Um...The game is already past version 1. Meaning it is, to an extent, complete, even if nowhere as they wanted nor was it implied/promised/expected to be.
That said, it sucks because the game is kinda bare-bones. So it would've actually benefited from a modding scene, unlike other cases.
Oh well.
┐(ツ)┌
Also yeah, I guess bugfixes are kind of a thing.

Oh shut the fuck up. I remember seeing a video where someone created a weapon that destroyed every single tile in the world and you could use it in an online world with no changes to the game engine whatsoever. This would be a problem in terms of modding.
Also, we are not entitled to anything. The last update was something extra and the fact we got it for free is pretty astounding considering it could have easily sold as cheap DLC. To say that the game now needs to be open source because development ceased is absolutely fucking stupid. We don't need shit. They made a game. We bought the game. We got cool shit out of it for free. Somehow we deserve more? I don't think so.

Download ILSpy, and take a look at the Terraria code. Then try and tell me, with a straight face, that Terraria should be moddable/open-source.

No we shouldn't. Devs who tease us for this long don't earn it. We'll see a formalized announcement should the game ever "go gold".

Oh, yes, quite possible. There's been a fair number of mods made already. Terraria Online even has a forum for modding.
Not sure how many were updated for the big 1.1 patch, mind you, but still, point stands.

My point wasn't asking if Modding was possible - I'm quite aware that it is.
I was saying that if right now you can hack the game to make it so that you can completely clear a map with one click and have it work server-side... What is the drawback of allowing modding more openly? The worst theoretical circumstance is basically already feasible in game right now.
(This is excluding like, hacking into people computers or something.) ____________________ |

So there's a really spiffy map/mod combo for Terraria called "The Story of Red Cloud." It's kind of a big deal (it's a HUGE map), and the author is claiming that there's 15-20 hours of content packed in it. :stare:
The dungeons in it are at least interesting and it's not terribly easy to get lost. One area leads into another, that sort of thing. |
