| DVDs are actually a good 15-or-so years old. But dang, it seems like technology is advancing faster than I can keep up with. If there are all sorts of DVD closeout sales in the near future, I'll try to get as many of them as possible. |

Woo, yet another doom-and-gloom "[x] technology is dead" article from industry "experts." Are these the same "experts" that predicted that smartphones would kill both game consoles and desktop/laptop computers a few years back, or that we'd all have jetpacks and hovercars by now? :specialed:
Regardless of what happens in the entertainment industry (which I honestly couldn't care less about), DVDs will still have their place in the computing industry as a cheap and well-supported file transfer and archival format for years to come. Hell, you can still buy recordable CDs (and even floppies in some places), and that format is several decades old. ____________________ |

That aside, streaming can be convenient for rental. My family sometimes streams a movie from our cable company, and it works pretty well. However, it only works with the TV that's hooked up to the cable box. I think it's funny that the article makes no mention of Blu-ray, though. I wonder why. ![]() ____________________ |

The technology hasn't gone 'out of use' so much as being blurred out by noisy 'newtech' people. ____________________ |

Paulguy's Post configuration Originally posted by Metal_Man88Originally posted by JoeOriginally posted by the articleYes, I'd much rather have a low-bitrate streaming video that only plays on approved devices and can be taken away from me at any time for any reason. Pretty much what I was going to say. And yeah, the illegality of copying DVDs yourself I think comes from DMCA. It may or may not be (there's a lot of misinformation here) illegal to copy a DVD assuming it's unprotected, as long as you weren't distributing it, for example, to put on a portable media player. But basically, the law works out in their favor so for any device or format you want the movie on, you need to buy it multiple times. Now, legal enforcement isn't enough for them. They need to make it technically difficult to do, so they make it so you can only watch the video from a stream that they have basically full control of up to the point that it's displayed on your monitor. It's through a trusted pathway all the way from their server to the display elements on your monitor, and if it was up to them, you'd never, ever have a locally cached copy. You'd need to ask them every time you want to watch the movie. Current infrastructure in the US, and many other countries makes that impractical, though, especially with people who want to be able to watch movies on their phones (for whatever reason.). So for now, we'll have physical media and offline copies (though still encrypted and restricted to certain software and OSes.). As for DVD, I think it's here to stay for at least a decent while longer. I know plenty of peopel who still have DVD players and no blu ray players, or just don't get the blu ray discs due to cost, or they already have the movies on DVD and/or VHS. I could definitely see the reason that people would want to replace VHSes with DVDs, but there really isn't much gain to be had from replacing DVD with blu ray. HD is nice, but I doubt most people care that much. ____________________ |

dvds may be on a steady down slope, but they can still be enjoyed in good quality. get yourself a dvd player with an hdmi cord on a 1080p hd tv and the picture quality will be superb. or you could use an hd dvd player. but blu-ray is the new hotness. i think dvds will be officially done around 2018 or so. towards the end of this current decade. because vhs lasted until 2005 if i recall correctly. so dvd will still exist. and anyways, people who distribute their stuff online usually release dvds, so burning blu-rays will have to become the norm before dvd can officially be laid to rest. that's how i see it at least. i think it will outlast vhs, but not by too much time. ____________________ Current Thoughts: we are living in a computer programmed reality.

Originally posted by ZildTechnically, a Blu-ray connected through HDMI should look much better than a DVD. (Not just because 1080 is a bigger number, but also because DVDs by design only accommodate interlaced video.) However, many Blu-rays are mastered very poorly, resulting in a level of quality that is not much different from the DVD release of the same movie. It doesn't help that most HDTVs have a huge load of post-processing, and frequently don't have panels that are exactly 1280x720 or 1920x1080. All in all, I'm not surprised Blu-ray doesn't look better than DVD. I think if you compared DVD and Blu-ray on a 1080p-capable computer monitor, you'd see a much greater difference. ____________________ |

Paulguy's Post configuration Oh god the post processing really sucks. On a lot of TVs some of it simply can't be disabled.
Also yeah, a good blu-ray looks absolutely fantastic. I just don't think people are going to go out and replace their DVD collection any time soon, if they already have DVDs. Also, currently blu ray disc movies are still fairly costly compared to DVDs for new releases. ____________________ |

Post #4498 · 02-13-12 02:26:46 AM Yup, modern TVs do all sorts of stupid nonsense like lying about their size and then poorly scaling the image to their real size. ![]() ____________________ |
