oh damn.

article.

basically (coincidence or not) one day after massive SOPA protests/blackouts the federal government shut down one of the biggest filesharing websites in the internet's hitstory. they seized over 600 million dollars in assests from just 7 guys it looks like. crazy shit. here's some of the swag they confiscated. just an hour later Anonymous jumped up and shut down some federal gov sites, because it's what they usually would do.

little bit of court stuff.

interview with anonymous guy who fronted the website attacks.

Holy cow. This is something I am quite shocked about, including the stuff they confiscated (some of it being quite rare).

ollllollllyyyyyyyyy crud!!!!
Dang , and i was just going to post this very same topic with a different title:

Great SOPA's ghost!! megaupload is no more!

It's too bad but at the same time kinda good but again too bad (more bad than good)

kinda good because of the money laundering & stuff that always made me feel guilty, because again -
MEga had to have some ties with mafiosos -
(now i understand why some people always refused to use MU to share junk with Oldyz & i)
Bad because at the end of the days it is mafia types

the ones who allow stuff to get done with some degree of nice good ol' anonimyniminty.....

Oldyz is sad, but full of ObamaHope

I have to admit I'm torn on this one. While I hate to see the government attacking file hosts (and indeed any websites) like this, I also despise these designed-to-annoy file "sharing" sites and won't miss them at all.

What we need is A) a Freenet implementation/clone that isn't a giant resource hog (i.e. not Java) and/or B) a simple server app that anyone can run on their own system to serve files. Decentralization.

Somehow it doesn't surprise me at all either that this happened just after SOPA was defeated. I can practically hear them saying "alright, time for plan B."

I'm not upset since you can still access the site by IP... It'll take some time but it'll be back up.

I don't remember the IP off the top of my head sadly.

Hope you realize it wasn't just piracy. Racketeering and money laundering are pretty serious charges, and the feds very very rarely bring a case unless they are sure they can convict (conviction rates in the 90th %)

I try to note that to people, but they just go "OMGZ ITZ SOPA" and I just throw my hands up and leave them to their paranoid worrying.

filesonic has now disabled its services. it wasn't shut down by the feds, but the act on megaupload seems to have scared them into doing this before the law does it to them.

Now that certainly is suspicious. Of course, it doesn't make the reasons for their shut down any less legitimate.

I've recently heard of ACTA being planned to be signed by multiple countries this week.

And since it'd be outside national law, it'll be that much harder to stop. :\

This is merely an ignorant high school student speculating. Cause, ya know, that stupidly huge indictment isn't the real reason the place was taken down.

So the head of Megaupload who is in jail was the top ranked player in MW3.

I was checking my Yahoo mail and found this news out hours ago. Odd case I have to admit, but I don't know if this founder pirated the game and/or was boosting in games.

Now I know I shouldn't do any kind of Matchmaking in any game anymore.
