I just don't understand why they didn't keep the drift boost mechanic from Super Mario Kart/Mario Kart Super Circuit - If you did a drift and you were greater than a sufficient angle you'd boost out of the turn with a high speed. The angle was under 180º although I don't know the exact amount, but it meant that sharp cornering on turns was well rewarded. Especially if you picked your line properly, if you straightened back out it reset the start point.

Meh, I'm done. We got this thread off topic for long enough.

So, is Waluigi in the game or not? I know there's Waluigi Pinball, but I haven't seen him mentioned with the game at all. If he isn't, I'll have to find someone else to stick with.

Yeah, I'm kinda wondering if JUL has created a community for online yet. If we haven't, it might be worth creating one.

I got it for Christmas, and I'm loving it.

Yes, we should make a Jul group.

I thought I would go ahead and make a unofficial JUL community for now. It's 08-0358-8488-1420, though I'm not sure how we can arrange a time that can be suitable for everyone though

I got it the day after Christmas. I haven't played much of it (only finished two 50cc cups), but I really do like it. I'm not being screwed over by the Blue Shell; by the time it hits me, I'm usually pretty far ahead. I also love the whole gliding/submarine part; it opens up whole new possibilities.

It's still a pain on 150cc.

And I do love how the retro courses have been updated with gliding and submarine sections, makes them feel fresh while bringing nostalgia.

Also, finally, a retro Rainbow Road!

SNES Rainbow Road can be a really fast race with just a basic grasp of the drift boosts.

Assuming you're precise enough to avoid the Thwomps. And you don't get shelled off the course. And you don't get shoved off the course by a boosting Bowser. And so on. It's pretty unforgiving.

When the Thwomps shake the road, you can use that to get a jump boost, but be careful not to send yourself off the edge. (This also works on the wavy parts of MK7's Rainbow Road)

It's a short, brutal race, but damn it's fun.

I got this game as a Yule gift as well.
I miss the GBA rainbow road, but hey, we where given the GBA mariokart of the 3DS, so why am I complaining?

Anyhow, I think the drifting was done really well in this game, it reminds me of kirby air ride (which is an AMAZING game by the way) a lot, and I really think it works in a good way. I honestly don't see the complaining about it, I really think it's a skill based mechanic in this game, and it sure as hell makes a lot more sense then it did in the other games.

But damn, GO AWAY BLUE SHELLS! I can understand things like the lightning bolt (which I personally think is decently fair since you get it when you're far behind.) but the blue shell just makes no freaking sense at all! You only get it when you're far back, it does not help you get forward, and the player hit by it is thrown in the air for way too long.

My main grip with the game, however, is that the menus are confusing as crap. I'm going to open up the manual to see if it sheds some light on the issues, but I honestly can't find any options for joining a group or searching for groups at all other then by street pass, and let's face it, that's not going to happen when I want to play with players on the other side of the planet!

I also got coins which I have yet to see any use for anywhere.

Anyhow, the retro cups where good, though, I'd love to have seen some of the more interesting tracks from the GBA one like, sky garden or ribbon road remade for this game rather then some of the more dull tracks from the DS and n64 games. In fact, more retro tracks overall would have been for the better. The new tracks... well, some of them are rather good, but honestly, I can't even remember half of them now when I'm thinking about it. Music was not much to hang on the Yule tree either, then again, I already knew that from the reviews.

TL;DR: It's a good game and I can't wait to play some online with it, but more/better tracks would have been awesome. The graphics are pretty sleek I suppose, but I don't really care much of graphics personally. :p

If you're saying the blue shell is useless because only the back gets it... you've always been able to get it if you're in at least 4th place. In a tight race, it'll let you get up to first, especially if the computers are all bunched together.

The way the online is set up, you can't choose to race with only a small group of players that you select. Your choices are either join a random online match, or join one the random matches that your friend/group member is already part of.

I don't drift at all because dexterity error. Other than that, it's a cool game.

It has nothing to do with waggling left and right this time around, you should have no trouble once you get a handle on how to steer.

Try time trial on SNES Rainbow Road a few times until you can drift around every turn without falling off. It's worth it.

Tyty: It still punishes the leader and does little to help the launcher. Lightning shrinks everyone, but the further back you are, the shorter the duration of your shrinkage; this brings the entire race closer together, thus helping those in back (which is where you usually get it.) This is an item I have no problem with the basic mechanics of. (I'm not a fan of how it gets rid of your item, however)

Comparatively, the blue shell does more to help whoever's in second than it does to help whoever shoots it.

Most of the time.

It really hurts whoever's in 2nd when they're just right behind the 1st-placer. Guy in 1st suddenly stops-- guy in 2nd is the new guy in 1st is the new target

Also, recall how the blue shell lost it's wings. Remember what that means? It means people hanging around what could be considered the center of the track can very well get nailed by the thing as well. This has happened to me before, and it can / will happen again.
(As to whether or not you can bean someone at close range with the thing is unknown as of yet, I figure it will but I am not willing to try it, no will to wound my own rank in GP since you can't single-track race anymore god dammit why did you take that thing out I LOVED THAT in MKDS and then you ruin it thanks a lot jerks)

Yes this is a great change and I love it. The ground going shell from MK64 and such was much better than the flying one from MKDS and such.

I hope they made the shell bounce you around less this time too.

3DS games do not use friendcodes, rather, they use the systems friendcode/friendlist.

Yes, it's a unified ID system. That code will work for every online game you find, so your friends will be always there as a way to play.

Edit: This is what I get for leaving the response box open for a while. I get
