"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

for years I've had a pretty homogenous network consisting of primarily XP computers, with file sharing and network printers set up and running perfectly fine. That feels like a long time ago now.

Now, one of the laptops was replaced, and the new one, you guessed it, shipped with 7, and this broke everything.

I can't ping the 7 computer at all from my XP one, and the other way around the 7 computer cannot access any of the XP shares, it just throws "Unknown error"s and I really have no idea why, and it's just so annoying because I have no experience with 7 at all

you know what if this fails I'm totally going to set up virtual PC and install XP inside and access the network that way, it's totally complicated but at least it works.

You can't even ping? That sounds less like a Win7/WinXP compatibility issue and more an issue with the network itself. You should be able to ping the computers just fine, because they should both be compatible with TCP/IP and IPv4.

You can right click 'My Computer' and set the Windows 7 computers to the same homegroup as the XP ones. Voila, done. Go to the 'Network' part on the Explorer Window and enable file sharing discovery if needed.

7 actually fixes the 'wait forever and freeze due to network' problem, so it's actually pretty pleasant to use with XP file sharing.

Amusingly, I set up the virtual PC with XP inside, and it worked on the first try. Of course, it's a bit cumbersome switching between the Windows 7 host and Windows XP guest, but otherwise this is a really viable method.

That shows me something's seriously wrong with 7.
