I've actually gotta agree here. Still gives you the error type, and looks a HELL of a lot less menacing to the normal end user.

Granted, I'm gonna miss the white-on-dark-blue bluescreen and cracking up whenever I see it in other places... but I said that about 95's when I switched to XP! (As it is, I can't recall seeing XP's more than ten times).

Even as a technical user, I gotta agree--the old BSODs were stupid. All that was needed was an error code and "you have hit an error." Not a bunch of random technical data that you'd have to literally disassemble on the fly to read.

I do have to wonder if they'll add filenames to the new style, however... it'd be good to at least have that so there's a bit of a chance to resolve the issue.

(Of course, there's a chance it's like that already and I just haven't seen it...)

yeah, sometimes a filename is useful to get a more specific driver bug or something. Maybe even the program counter. Trouble is, the system is halted at that point, and it's all or nothing. If it's going to display those details, it'll have to display them, and not ask the user if they want details.

To be honest, I don't know that it scared many people. Isn't the default to just reboot right away, so you'd maybe get a short flicker of a blue screen if your monitor can sync to the new resolution quickly enough?

The BSOD at least includes a text-description of the error along with a suggestion, whereas, say, XP just rebooted... or displayed a technically garbage STOP screen with a lot of useless bullshit and a meaningless-to-the-end-user error code.

Honestly, I don't mind the new error screen. It's simple, it still gives the information that is needed to begin diagnosing the problem, and it means less time spent trying to figure out what variant of 0x7E you have. Besides, the kernel dumps its RAM contents when the system is halted, you don't need to display more information at that time. Save it for when the system reboots.

Better than the OSX version, regardless. All you get is a "You need to hold down the power button and restart your computer", no error message or anything.

Wow, which version of Mac OS was that? Even I remember it giving something like the program and error type

I wonder if Microsoft will pretty up the error type on the SFOD screen... such as "IRQL not less or equal" instead of "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Well ... normally. If it's something really severe it will switch to text mode without clearing the screen and do a BSD-like kernel panic. I think there is a way to disable the "friendly" kernel panic message somehow. Regardless it at least makes a log of what happened. Of course ... Windows NT has always kept a log too, but not always in an easily-readable format.

random history: The bomb dialog had iterations where it would give a cryptic error ID number, one where it would list just what error occurred ("coprocessor not installed") and in System 7 it finally showed what application crashed. But you could go into the ROM debugger and set an ExitToShell_ command at 0x000000 (hit the programmer's switch and type SM 0 A9F4 G) and get out of the bomb dialog (as long as it wasn't the Finder that crashed, otherwise it'd just crash again with a type 41 "can't load the Finder" error), maybe save what you were doing in other applications, and then restart manually. There was an extension called BombShelter that would add a "Continue" button to the dialog to do this for you.

I have an interest in those old bitmapped Macs with the 68000 processor and like to fiddle with things in memory a lot so I end up crashing the emulated system a lot. It's fun to get things like this:

I think they have something if they do indeed tie in Windows Phone support into those desktop Metro apps. It would allow you to use the same app on all three device types for (possibly) the same price. Regardless Microsoft could have the advantage even if the phone apps still end up being separate. They also have better Multiscreen + Full screen app support than Apple does with Lion. I am not a fan of full screen apps, but unlike Apple Win8 will allow you to open one app per screen (including the Classic Desktop). I have an iPad I got for supporting them at work, and mostly it sits unused. There may be a better chance that people might use it if it was the same as their computer?

This actually threw me off for a moment - you do mean per monitor, I'm guessing? The inability to use a full screen app on another screen in Lion actually bothered me when I tried using my laptop with my main monitor. (For a moment I was thinking multiple desktops and it was really throwing me off until I actually started posting this.)

Yup, that's what I was talking about. I'm a multi monitor user, and having one that linen background makes it useless. I do hear some graphics apps will use the second monitor for the full screen app that is currently running. IE: Pallets and Tools, but I've not seen this myself however.

Windows 8 is gaining momentum in terms of gaming. It's doing a good job of competing with 7 in a couple of games. This is quite important to me as a gamer. Regardless, I do still prefer the 7 style start menus and such...well old style anyway.

Here's an example from Assassin's Creed Revelations. The difference is minuscule, but it's there:

You can't really compare a non-final release to a final realease. They may have foregone some security/range checking for the sake of making things work.

I recently used the developer preview and it was atrocious. I sure hope there will be a mode to just use the 7 start menu. Also, there's no way to close metro programs. They just sit in memory after you've run them until you end them in task manager. Even gold old ALT+F4 didn't do anything. Holy crap this metro stuff is horrible, horrible crap that caters to complete idiots and enables people to not build any problem solving skills at all. So we'll continue to see people just getting even stupider when it comes to using computers, which is absolutely perfect for advertisers and scammers. I wonder if that's the goal.

Meh, someone will probably hack a way to disable/destroy Metro after it inevitably becomes some huge issue that annoys anyone used to a real OS.

I hope they do more optimizations on the underlying code the rest of us use though. The slight improvements in 7 are kind of nice, even for a crotchety anti-upgrade person like me.

Yeah, there is a way to disable the Metro UI through the Registry. It's quite nice without it

As a kid, the 9x BSOD would be pants-shittingly terrifying. And error messages stating illegal operations. OH FUCK I DID SOMETHING WRONG THE POLICE ARE COMING.

I used to get somewhat scared when the rare Windows 3.1-style GPF appeared in 9x. There was something ominous about it compared to the usual "This program has performed an illegal operation" dialog, like the system was going to come crashing down at any moment.

BSODs in any form just freak me right the hell out, regardless of OS.
