Paulguy's Post configuration
I'll be very frank with you; it's not very good. There's a lot more that can be done than just running a couple of programs, and the output from antimalware can be confusing for someone who's layman. You should go in to more detail about pretty much everything.
Also, as an alternative to just mentioning a couple things someone can uninstall, perhaps point someone to a resource that can help them with this. I don't know if a site exists that lists software and the actual use and whether it's necessary or not (spybot has something like this for startup applications), but if one exists, link them to it, or maybe start one yourself.
Some antivirus programs will actually catch other (not specifically "virus") malware including ad/spyware. Some commercial ones offer it as a separate option and some of the free ones have it built in. Perhaps look for a few comparison articles on antivirus programs and provide them, so people can read about them and make a decision. And also give information on specific ad/spyware removal software and links related to them.
Just some examples. Honestly, covering all the topics in depth would be ridiculous (you'd have to make an entire site out of it, which I'm sure people have done.) so giving people the resources necessary to research their options would be a better approach than just a small article.

| | Metal_Man88's Post | This is only the beginning of optimization. Also crucial to performance: removing unnecessary programs from the startup list, defragmenting (if you have XP), proper virtual memory settings, defragmenting the registry, optimized defragmenting (JKDefrag style), and tweaking Windows theme settings to turn off all the cruft.

I've never found Windows theme settings to change very much, in my experience - of course, I'd imagine much older machines really could benefit from it. The performance boost going from my custom visual styles on XP (via uxtheme hacking, of course) to Windows Classic was... very minimal, at best.
Doesn't running Aero on Vista/7 offload the UI to the GPU instead, too? I'd rather take that, personally...

I found that by simply installing games to a secondary HDD, the load times were cut in half at least. |

| | Metal_Man88's Post | A RAID array, or usingthem as two separate disks?
Er, wait. No, that's clearly two separate disks.
RAID would help too.

Yeah, I just installed a second HDD.
RAID 0 is all your data spread across two drives (fast, but if one drive fails your data is potentially gone)
RAID 1 is a copy of the data on each drive. Redundancy. (One drive fails you have a perfectly good copy to keep running on. I use this in servers.)
RAID 1 is what I use since I can swap in another drive if one fails, without as much risk to data. I still make backups, though. |

| | Metal_Man88's Post | RAID 1 and 0 is great when used together, but IIRC that takes a lot of hard drives.
