51GB HD-DVD approved by DVD Forum

So much for "Blu-ray has more capacity", eh?

Uh...HH...they made 200GB 8-layer Blu-rays two years ago.

It's just not on display for the public.

EDIT: Just so you can look at what I'm saying... They're behind on commercializing the 4-layer 100GB.

Right. They're still in development, or at least, still in the process of being approved. You won't be seeing them on shelves for a while yet.

True, but I was aiming more for you Blu-Ray has more capacity crack.

Blu-ray owns out over HD-DVD for space but it doesn't necessarily mean it will be the chosen thing to use.

Then again, there are more BD burners than HD-DVD burners out there currently (and excessively priced for shit burn speeds).

Damn straight. I'm not paying 1000 € for a thing that burns me discs that nobody uses or wants (yet).

And that may fail badly, thus making it rarer and pricier.

Then you'd prolly hate the concept of a 1.6TB disc that has a data transfer max of 120MB/s. Then again they already have tapes that do that with double said rate.

*sigh*
I still prefer Video Tapes more than anything else. :/
I guess I'm the only one left.
If I had to chose between DVDs and Blu-ray, I'll always pick DVDs.

I don't really care if this makes Sony mad or not... Picking out everything that makes Sony look bad is getting old.

Doubt it. It's been proven a long time ago that analog beats out digital for quality...it's the difference between compressed with some minor quality loss (digital/DVD) and not compressed (analog/tape). Most videophiles will say they're all about VHS tapes being the best storage medium for quality when in truth the human body's not going to see much of a difference anyways unless the compression in a DVD is terrible...and I have seen that happen quite a few times.

At the same time, that's why people still use high-power 35mm cameras. Even a 10MP loaded digital can't beat out some of them for quality.

However, at a point, even that argument is useless. BD multiple-layer discs would likely be hard to distinguish from VHS by a normal human. Even right now if you put a VHS tape recording in front of them and then a DVD/BD recording in front of them and didn't tell them which one was which...unless the quality was exceptionally poor in either of them from their norm, you aren't going to be able to guess usually.

It's true that an ideal analog video tape could beat anything but such a tape with unlimited resolution doesn't exist. And VHS cannot beat an average DVD. VHS tapes have far fewer vertical lines and the tape itself lacks the bandwidth for much horizontal resolution so you end up with something a bit closer to 320x240, with analog noise and other things on top of that.

Isn't BluRay catching on more in Japan than HD-DVD in terms of shelf space? I could swear that I read that recently.

You can still pick up video tapes easily at most stores around here but eventually they'll go the way of the dodo.

I don't know why I put this here.
Ideally, we'd all just have time machines which would allow us to see whatever was recorded for ourselves. :p

But, in reality, I hope Blue-ray loses, as it looks expensive and cloggy just like Betamax. Plus, it has more of that weird and annoying Sony hype around it.

I'm not really interested in HD-DVD either, though, as the format I prefer is a holographic ultra-disc which will ostensibly beat out both in the near future.

I was at a Barnes and Noble the other day, and noticed that while they had a Blu-Ray section, there was no HD-DVDs in sight- certainly a good sign for Sony, though the BR section was very tiny.

Speaking of which, where are the holographic disks? Weren't we supposed to have them by now?

(The following text may contain conspiracy theories.)
I'll bet they've already got it basically perfected, and they're just waiting until the movie industry decides they've made enough money off of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Then, they'll introduce the new, better format and make money off people trying to replace their movie collections with the new format again, just like what happened with DVD and what's happening with HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.

Yup, the holographic 354464 Exabyte disks are always about 2 years away.
