And now my take:

Make Sonic Fast: There is no way that a fat plumber who gets high on mushrooms can out run Sonic. Granted, a headgehog isn't that fast, but in Sonic's reality, he is and he can.

Limit The Amount of Playable Characters: Who the hell are these people?!! Make it three playable characters at max: Sonic, Knuckles and Tails. That's it.

But then again, maybe I out grew Sonic and I have this special place for the old school Sonic only because I played it so many times when I was younger..but I haven't been able to get into a Sonic game since Dreamcast, and thats pushing it.

The characters arguement is one I agree with, but I don't think it's really a "classic vs. modern" arguement- all the classic games introduced new characters too... now, however, the series is getting way too crowded

In my opinion, if something worked in 2D, don't be afraid to keep with the 2D, even with these new generations. Hell, we all still play *NES*, and many game companies want to "keep with the times", despite time not really going very far.

Mario 64 still had some sidescrolling parts in it.

Anyway, as an aspiring game programmer/designer, I really want to figure out what it is that's causing so many 3d games to turn out so bad. Only problem is that I tend not to play very many 3d platformers these days. I really could use someone with an extensive library of 3d (not isometric 2d) platformers, good and bad.

Anyway... uhh... I think I had this discussion before somewhere, actually. Deja Vu? Eh, whatever.

Anyway, Sonic's original selling point was his speed. He ran all over the place, up walls, on the ceiling, around loops, and it was just about speed. By no means was it a race or anything, it was really just focused on the ability to go faster than what anyone's seen before. It's that blast processing, man, I'm telling you.

I don't think I have a very good perspective on Sonic these days, since I haven't played any of the newer 3d games.

Edit: Also, the Mario series has a lot of characters too, but the reason it's not crowded is because a lot of them were just one-game-only, or one-line-of-games-only, or are just enemies, or minor characters. None of this 20 main character stuff.

One of the main advantages of 3D action games is the ability to roam around and have complete directional control of your character. In Sonic, however, I believe that really takes away from the speed of the game.
On the contrary, I found the Sonic Adventure series felt pretty fast (except those SFGSAGDGSA treasure hunting levels >: ), but really restricted what you could do. You were practically (sometimes literally ) on rails the whole time. Try to wander off somewhere and the camera just will not let you see the way. You're basically forced to head forward at full speed.

I thought some of the more recent Sonic games seemed like good games, but not like Sonic games. :-/

In that case, it's better as a 2d or 3d side scroller (3d side scrollers are possible. Mario 64 even had some side scrolling parts in it, just look at the boss stages).

I guess the Sonic games weren't really my style. The main focus was obviously supposed to be speed, but I never sped through the levels. I had to explore each level completely, making sure not to miss any hidden parts to the level. I enjoyed the exploration itself more than I enjoyed simply completing a level.

The games were pretty much made to be either speed-fests or exploration, from what I see... There's plenty of exploration to be done, but it's not mandatory.

It adds a bit of replay value. You can go through once at full speed and then again to look for things you missed. Sure, you can do that in other games, but in Sonic, it's fun.

So does Mario Galaxy. It's used enough to be fun, but not nerve-grinding.

As for the argument against current Sonic, I present Exhibits A and B: Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure. While during the main story mode, characters are introduced that can be rather annoying, the actual GAMEPLAY is absolutely ace: You are easily allowed the choice of "speed or exploration". And on the subject of "too many characters", you can only play as Sonic or Blaze (where Sonic is good for speed, and Blaze, exploring). Also, the voice acting is toned down to about the level you might hear in, say, a 3D Mario platformer. [Mario Advance amount of voice acting? Wishful thinkin', y'knaa. ]

In SA2 Battle, I just used the Action Replay code to swap Tails in his mech with mechless Tails from the Chao lobby.

Sonic and the secret rings was a little linear, but I liked its mission system.

Also, the Eggman mech levels were fun, even if Tails' weren't.

Sonic 06 was... It was no Sonic Adventure, or Sonic Adventure 2, and was very glitchy, but, it's the second fastest 3D sonic game out there (Sonic & the Secret Rings Sonic + My speed ring = Fast. End of story.)

My main problem, is that Sonic Team isn't taking their time with creating games, thats why they aren't as good.

And of course the 3D games aren't like the 2D ones.

Finally on the character issue, Adding more characters is fine, and so is having alot of playable ones, it just depends on what TYPE of game it is, not what series it is.

A good start? Sonic 3K remake. Totally three-dimensional except still a side scroller. Instant profit. Wiiware would make more profit (Think 0% piracy).

Mario 64 still had some sidescrolling parts in it.

So did Sunshine, and that was by far the best part of the game! Those levels were quite well-designed and challenging.

It seems that when Sega have done 2D Sonic games recently (Sonic Rush + Sonic Rush Adventure), they're good. When they do 3D, aside from Secret Rings (which I really should pick up, it's pretty cheap), it's not so good. Maybe they should try to design the games in 2D, then convert them into 3D. :\

But when the developers want to be really lazy... oh boy. They can't even PORT stuff *cough*Sonic Genesis for GBA*cough* correctly.

I don't even think Sega themselves did Sonic Genesis, though, I could of sworn someone told me it was some third party who presumably doesn't want to be named. They obviously didn't use the original code at all, either way... I'm sure even they regret having it done though.

See, the amusing thing about Sonic Genesis is that prior to that, they did pretty much a perfect port... to cell phones. Not only was it almost a direct port from the original's source, but it also even contained a few remnants of prerelease data (see: Marble Zone UFOs) in the files.

I've yet to play either Sonic '06 or Secret Rings. I have, however, spent many pleasant hours on both Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.

I remember reading that the developer was Sonic Team.

If it was a third party or an American company, shame on Sonic Team for attaching their name to that piece of crap. And if it WAS Sonic Team... holy geez. They have the new interns work on that one?
