This is the case I'm in with my phone as well... plus, it seems like any attempt to use the "actual" internet on a phone like mine (312Mhz processor, 320x320 screen) will just end in disaster.

I tried to post from my Ipod Touch, but I got an IP ban notice the moment I logged in.

My crappy cheap dumbphone has Internet, but I never use it because it costs like $6 an hour.

...dear god, seriously?

I think mine is $1.50 for a day. Not worth it, but if you're going to be away from home and need to check something simple, I guess it works okay.

I miss when I was able to use it for free. Fucking awesome time.

I'm surprised anything still charges internet by the hour- I seem to remember that used to be common, but now it seems like most things go by the byte. (or megabyte, whatever )

For a cell phone like that, I'd more expect it to charge by the page view.

That could get expensive quick if the browser isn't absolute shit.

Yeah, hourly charges were popular in the 1980s for dial-up "online services" (CompuServe, QuantumLink, etc.) And the modems were so slow that you'd see each individual character display on the screen.

No wonder barely anyone used them in those days

I wasn't around that early, but now I am reminded of how I used to beg my parents to use AOL in 15-minute intervals. (even on dial-up, you could download a whole bunch of ZZT games in that time. )

Paulguy's Post configuration
Thread has been revived.

I recently got a blackberry playbook, because it was something different and unusual. Not android or ios, but blackberry tablet os, based on qnx. I honestly think that for a 1.0, they've already done better than android has done, and of course less retarded about everything than ios. Only problem is there's no software, really.

And there never will be.

Blackberry dropped the ball long ago and everyone I know that has one is getting away from them as soon as they can. :|

Well, to be fair on the subject of software, I remember reading that RIMM was working on a Dalvik VM for QNX that would allow Android programs to run on the PlayBook... I don't know if that went anywhere or not though.

I could post from Pocket Internet Explorer, but it'd cost me too much for it to be worth it.

You know, these past few replies make me wish my 486's case didn't suck again.

I'd probably upgrade the thing slightly (toss an ethernet card in) and get online with it just to say I could, by this point...

I got a 486 online, but it wasn't quite as hard as I thought.

It's much trickier to try and do with, say, a 286.

Or... well, other "strange" platforms.

I'd love to get, say, an Atari 800/XE/XL/whatever online... just for the hell of it. Contiki actually makes web browsing and such possible.

Of course, that'd end up being a one-time thing before the novelty really fades, so I dunno if I'd actually try to do it...

I assume that would be just text-only, because otherwise..

Yeah, text-only.

I've poked at Contiki with an emulator... but unfortunately, I don't think Atari800 has the ability to do such things.
