They've treated Sonic Retro pretty well so far, all things considered.

Aside from the $600 up-front, this sounds like a good solution to me, considering, afaik, Sonic Retro does pretty good server-wise.

Same, except for the $600 starter price tag. Wait...did you say $50 a month too to keep it up, or did I just totally misread that?

That's starting to sound like quite an expensive option.

Personally, I don't know how you plan to afford $50/month... That worries me a bit.

Yeah, that's really expensive.

So does that mean we get to have annoying pledge drives on TCRF too? (Nah, we'd make them fun... I hope.)

Does TCRF have separate income from ads, too? Or are they just on Jul? I can't visit it from work since it blocks it as potentially unsafe...

$50/month sounds rather reasonable to me for someone in need of such a service, but I wouldn't fork that out unless I had as much popularity as say this place. As far as how much it's within reach of this board, how much do the ads usually raise a month? And how much do we currently pay?

Last time I checked, TCRF has ads as well. I don't know how much they bring in, though.

If you did go this route, would it make sense to move the rustedlogic stuff over to the server as well? Then you'd only have the one bill, at least... (though I suppose there's an issue of relying on a single host for everything)

Average of $0.30~$0.50 daily combined (so about $15-30 a month depending on spikes). It isn't a whole lot but it does its part.

The Rusted Logic finances have mostly been entirely out-of-pocket since the last RL Donation Drive. TCRF eats $25/month as it is right now and $50 wouldn't be that big of an issue as long as I'm employed.

If you want pricey, try the Rusted Logic hosting in general, which is over about $250 now (but paid every two years). That one will sting in 2013 >)>

Most of the stuff not needing TCRF-like requirements would definitely stay on DreamHost (there's really no reason to move and $9/month or so on average is not terribly expensive for what we use it for). I'd probably consider moving stuff like stats.rustedlogic.net though, which is failing under the restrictions of shared hosting.

It's funny to think that "medium" sites in Piwik are ones with >= 700 visits/day when we have a bunch more

We could piggyback off of retro while we run a donation drive on wiki and also on site? That might be something to look at as well.

I hope I did not state the obvious or something that someone else said...

I have a friend who spent $6000 on his server. He used it for massive RO servers. He got fed up with the hosting company and took it home and put it on a T1 line. :/ So for a dedicated blade it's not a bad deal at all.

I've used Linode for about 2 months now. I do like it, but the scale it seems is needed it would get pricey. I also still run a server at my mother's house like I did back in the day (however I am thinking of finally closing that down now that I can afford a dedicated one elsewhere)

I'd be willing to donate some money as well. (This may be the first year I can afford to donate to various projects for once ) Really I think with all the content you do TCRF having a dedicated server could be very beneficial.

I remember when I started kafuka.org and acmlm.org 10 years ago when I didn't have any money. EmuNET and all that kind of sucked due to the fact I could never get the main server on to a real host due to the costs involved always bugged me.

EDIT: I added some to the dreamhost kitty. If you want some to help with the relocation drop me a line.

i use SurpassHosting and they are pretty fantastic. I pay around $7 a month and the bandwith/data allowances are pretty decent, or at least were when I got my package. May be worth a look

I've been working with ScarredSun to get a plan together to purchase the parts to make a dedicated server. The price range is looking to be about $350 or so, but it should be fast, at least.

We shall see.

This is why I picked Linode. Retro wouldn't be that bad, but... I dunno, I kind of worry sometimes.

Agreed. Except I picked staying with the current host. I personally have never had any trouble accessing Jul. I would pay for this hosting. I might soon. Then again, I currently use a free Canadian host that is randomly slow and even goes down randomly (though not that often)... So may be I'm just cheap.
