Same for me, I never know for sure how long I'll take to fall asleep. Some nights I fall asleep within a couple minutes; others I stay up for a good hour or two and get frustrated because I could be doing other things rather than just lying in bed. I mean, if I'm not sleeping, there's really no reason to just be wasting time in bed...

I have the mindset that if I lay in bed for 8 hours then I will be good to go for work.

Never really heard of sleep cycles. REM sleep yes. But never sleep cycles

My sleep cycle most likely is not on the same schedule this thing is. I feel tired when it says I am not and vice versa.

Generally I've found I either require a bit less sleep than I should get (~7 hours) or more sleep than I could possibly need (9-10 hours) to feel rested. Or sometimes even 5 hours will do.

If it's saying the opposite of what you're experiencing, you're probably not using it right.

@Bitmap: Yeah, REM Sleep is one of the stages of the sleep cycle. I forget where I learned it, but I know it wasn't from any class in school.

Same here - this is why, if my mind isn't really active and I can't fall asleep, I start doing something while I'm in bed.

I stay in bed so I don't have far to go when I actually start feeling like I'm about to fall asleep - just put what I'm doing aside and try again to sleep. It usually works.

I normally try to wake up around 5 AM for a morning jog/workout and one of my recommended times was 12 AM. Seems about right to me. Sometimes I can't fall asleep right away though and end up falling asleep at 2 AM and those mornings suck.

This is actually a really practical way to make good use of your time that I haven't thought of before. I think I'm going to try it next time I have trouble falling asleep!

When I have to wake up at 4am for work, I'll try to go to bed at 10pm.

When I have to wake up at 5am for work, I'll try to go to bed at 11pm.

When I work the night shift or if I'm off, I really don't care when I go to bed. I do try to wake up before 11am.
