So far, I've found 16 prototypes of Comix Zone and six of Dynamite Headdy. Would research of all these be of any use? I'm researching some protos of The Ooze right now, so I'm just inquiring.
Huh, haven't been here in a while. I'm forgetful.

Are referring to those prototype drx released back in 2008?
If so, those six prototypes of Dynamite Headdy would be localization prototypes, since a lot of the things present in the U.S./European version are already in those builds.
Comix Zone would probably be the more interesting one, since no one I know of has found anything unused there nor there a lot of documentation on the prototypes.
This is the best source I have found so far:

You'd be surprised what you find when putting time into those neurotic guys at BetaArchive.

I think the April prototype (the one discussed in the link you posted) would probably have more in the way of unused content than any of the versions drx released. Considering that some of the music and sound effects which are actually used in that prototype didn't make it to the final, there may very well be unused graphics and whatnot that only exist in that version. I don't know if anyone's ever looked that deep.
That said, the versions drx released might be interesting as well. The earliest version--May 26, 1995--still has the text "JEAN CLAUDE CRAYON DANS LE ZONE COMIQUE" and "JOE PENCIL IN THE COMIX ZONE" in the rom's header, which are holdovers from the April proto. The next version, May 30, still has "JOE PENCIL", but lacks "JEAN CLAUDE". By June 1, the header contains the title "COMIX ZONE" and the message "DON'T LOOK AT THIS!", which remain in the final. This version is also the first to feature the finished title screen, with the "All Rights Reserved" message. Pretty insignificant stuff, but there might be more exciting things going on behind the scenes, so to speak.
I'm pretty clueless when it comes to looking through roms and finding unused content, but I'm definitely interested to see what you may find, if you have a look. |
