What is with these article titles acting like this is the Sony incident again?

The credit card info and passwords were encrypted this time and the passwords were salted. The big difference besides this is that Valve informed everyone immediately and kept the service up regardless, whereas Sony only notified everyone a week after the fact AND completely shut down PSN for over a month.

I'm not too concerned about this. Steamguard will make it impossible for Steam accounts to be breached easily, especially given that it sends an e-mail when you login from a very different IP.

Yeah, it's definitely a far cry from the Sony kerfuffle.

Steam Guard is actually even more comprehensive than that too - it'll activate if either your system OR IP changes. I had to enter steamguard for both the OSX and Windows7 partitions on my laptop. Or if I use the other two computers in the house.

Because they both got hacked, duh. They're totally the same.

Kind of wish they'd been a bit faster on the uptake, but when it takes weeks to months normally and they did it under 7 days I'll take it.

I already saw.
They hacked in the right moment when the TF2 come a really-mess-up and buggy update, that I would sent some bugs on it.

This is why I use PayPal to make Steam purchases instead of credit card info.

Still, at least they have Steam Guard. That's what it's there for.

This. Though I'll still update my passwords anyway just in case.

Damn. Well at least I didn't save any credit info to my account any time I made purchases.

Amusingly I've heard horror stories of people getting their accounts suspended after making purchases through paypal...

Suspended via PayPal? Never happened to me. Maybe a problem with the payments themselves...

So it also got Steam. Nothing to be ashamed of, as there is no 100% security but strongly depends how a company reacts on accidents like that.
It just relies if Valve really put more efforts or measures to protect their service now. I don't recall having a Steam board account, but still might consider changing my password for logging in into the client. Although there's only Portal 1 and Team Fortress on it, while no other payment information is entered (plus it uses other passwords than on pages with payment information). If they breached into Amazon or Ebay it'd would be bad, although I think my passwords are strong enough - if it is not using a security hole on those servers as well

I'm still wondering if we're going to get some kind of silly compensation for this
