I don't think any threads on I1 got nearly as big as this or WOYM, etc. Seems to me that threads were more transient in those days. People would just make a new thread instead of posting in an old one.
Maybe because I1 was more active and threads got lost more easily, plus the steady flow of new users coming in who didn't know about the old threads.

Yeah, the "generic talk about anything" threads really only started to show up later...
I get the impression people made new threads more often back then, but then again, people posted a lot more often back then in general, so maybe it's just that.

I think a food forum would be a great idea. I could talk about candy or kiwifruit or quinoa. Or how to make awesome scrambled eggs.

Oh god leftover fries.
Don't you have to refry those for them to be any good?
Yeah, generally. I cut them up, season them a little and then pan-fry them and then serve them as home fries.

The world is burning and you're recreating Star Wars using virtual Legos. Are you eight? Stop it.
I love this.

sure
I actually like Angry Birds because it pisses people off to no end. (I've only played the free iOS one and it was "okay" but people saying it'll replace Tetris or something to that extent need their fucking heads examined)

It's SomethingAwful though. That part of the Internet that gets ornery at every little thing to the point of contradicting its contradictions that have previously contradicted other contradicting contradictions.

I thought the whole Angry Birds hatred went wider than SA, though. Huh.

Honestly looking at the wider internet I end up seeing more of the opposite- "ANGRY BIRDS IS THE GREATEST THING ALL NON-SMARTPHONE GAMING IS DOOMED FOREVER" or whatever...
I am reminded of going to the store the other day with a friend, who noticed and pointed out a stand of Angry Birds gummy fruit snacks. I was like, "Why?"

I see this too and it's just as dumb.
Seriously - mobile phone gaming, for the most part, fucking sucks. The iPod touch is a WONDERFUL netbook replacement (and it even fits into your pocket!), but for gaming... yeah, uh, no. Touchscreen input like that just does not work well.
There are some exceptional mobile games out there. But the market is flooded with so many mediocre ones that the pickings are slim. Angry Birds is actually pretty fun and I've had it on my iPod touch and now iPhone for about 2 years. I never did get Season or Rio, though.
Some other decent mobile games:
Siege Hero - similar to Angry Birds, but straight on instead of side ways. You throw rocks and other objects (like a catapult) at enemies to break down their structures.
Eternity Warriors - hack and slash 3rd person, decent play time and has leveling, armor, and weapon upgrades
Epic War TD - Really good tower defense game, lots of maps and units with various strategies
Anomaly Warzone Earth - Described as a "reverse tower defense", you control a convoy and pick the best route through enemy territories with various turrets. You repair, shield, and sneak your way through.
Fruit Ninja - slice and dice game, you cut up flying fruit and avoid cutting bombs
Drift Mania - Racing game all about drifting. Simple enough mechanics and really fun to try and master drifting
Chaos Rings - Square Enix RPG specifically for iOS devices. Great graphics and play style. Has a good combat system and decent amount of hours to finish.
And I have had loads of kids apps that make great baby sitters while at a restaurant or something. So I wouldn't say that mobile gaming sucks. It's just that the vast majority of apps are not worth your time because the developer was either looking for a quick buck or didn't spend enough time planning everything out.
