I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but technology is involved in any case, so why not.

So, soon I'm going to have to be doing some more soldering... including a mini-DIN connector, which seems like it will be more than a little difficult. Does anyone here have any experience or help that could make things easier?

One thing I'm having specific trouble with is tinning the soldering iron, for some reason- the solder will melt if I touch it further up the tip, but when I touch it directly to the tip it doesn't seem to react. Does anyone know what my issue might be here?

I've often had that issue myself. I attributed it to surface area. I figured very the tip just didn't have enough metal making contact to transmit enough heat to melt the solder. Turn the heat up?

(Note: I'm not very good at soldering honestly. Granted that doesn't stop me from doing it.)

Actually, it turns out that the issue with the tip was oxidation... so that solves that problem, at least.

I should probably learn how to solder one of these days. I am fairly certain my mom knows how, so I can see if she can give me a tutorial. It probably isn't too hard, but I kinda have a thing with tools that have their tips get very hot and trying not to start a fire.

And not the kind she gives while teaching me to drive. Occasionally I'll get so sick of her saying 'stop stop stop stop' that I pretty much slam on the breaks just to piss her off.

I basically ended up sanding the tip to get the oxidation off- I'm not sure if that's the best option for the long-term health of the tip, but it worked a lot better after that.

Don't burn yourself.

I'm not very good at soldering, so that's really my only tip for you. I've accidentally burned the fingers I was using to steady a PCB that needed some solder to fix a connector a couple times.

Yeah, burns can be a problem.

I've dropped hot wires, liquid insulation, liquid solder, and even the soldering iron itself on my hands, and it's not pleasant.

Soldering irons operate at several-hundred-degree temperatures, which seriously accelerates the oxidation process, whether oxidation is present or not.

The big issue I'm having now is, I have a rather large circular connector and I have to wire a rather large cable (over ten conductors) to it... is there any easy way to keep everything in place? As after one wire is soldered, it seems like it will be hard to get any others into the soldering cups...

You need one of those "helping hands" things that Radio Shack sells. It's basically a heavy metal base with two movable alligator clips and a magnifier.

I would also highly recommend you get a soldering iron holder with a tip cleaning sponge (you wet the sponge and periodically use it to wipe off the excess solder and burned crap from the tip). My tips have lasted a lot longer ever since I started using one.

I got one of these now- it doesn't have a magnifier but it does have the alligator tips- before this I had just been using a vice, which wasn't as versatile I guess.

I have been doing this as well, good to see I'm doing something right...

Today's soldering tip from me is: turn the soldering iron on before trying to melt the solder! It helps.
