Texting is hard. :\ I mean, at least I have a keypad to do it on instead of a touch screen, but still... need time to adjust to it.

Plus, as you all know, I'm not one for abbreviations. :\

I never texted much until I got a phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard... no need for abbreviations then.

Oh, I have a pad too. QWERTY layout but obviously there's a function key I need to press for some symbols and I haven't quite memorized those yet.

Ah, I see- those are all printed on this keyboard (and then everything else is just in the Alt key- it's a fairly convenient setup...)

Even with a numeric keypad, I've never used abbreviations or shorthand in text messages.

I guess you just adjust to it...

Same here. I always type out full words in proper grammar, even if it takes me a while.

On youtube in the comments section for a video, listening to the death egg robot boss music from Sonic generations.

Half the comment section is people arguing about whether Pinkie Pie, The Flash, or Sonic would win in a race...

Oh my god I have a 750-word essay due tomorrow why do I procrastinate so much!?

In other news, the Gaming club finally decides to dedicate a day to handhelds, from lack of ideas for console games to bring. You'd think it would've been more popular and asked for, but nope.

youtube.

Delpolo what kind of essay is it? It might not be too difficult if it's an actual interesting subject, but anything with a length requirement is always fucking boring.

Never use contractions or similar in such essays, I say - it'll pad the count a little bit, and if you're struggling to write enough it CAN add up.

Why don't people value short, to-the-point writing?

They do in science writing... for example, I currently apparently need to dramatically slash my eight-page midyear report.

...Well fuck, that's a first!

I seriously haven't ever heard of a class where less is better. (We were given one-page "journals" in my earth science class last year, but it was more of "you have to write a full page" than "you have to keep it within one page")

I'm not allowed to write more than a page in my reading responses in my Informatics classes. Otherwise I get graded down!

I had a teacher once who had a minimum length for papers, but if you had "too much padding" he'd auto-fail you.

I ended up dropping out of his class. If I got 5 cents every time he flunked someone, I'd be rich.

Oh my god why was I worrying so much yesterday night!?

With the outline I did already, it only took me about 80 minutes to write this analysis on Jekyll and Hyde.

But yeah, length usually isn't an issue in English texts, especially when we're allowed to use quotes as evidence; but on the other end of the spectrum, a friend of mine has the English Department head as her teacher, and he's apparently really strict with essays, saying that the bare minimum is the best and anything more is just padding... and that's just the start.

As for short and to-the-point writing: the school suggests, if you're out of time, that you just write the rest of an essay in bullet form. On a test in a Music History class, the instructions said either a full essay or just the main points; guess what I chose (and for bonus points, guess what the majority didn't choose).

One of my professors puts a maximum page limit on writing assignments, and flat out states in the rubric that he will stop reading anything past the page limit. He's great.

What would constitute "too much padding" anyway? Most essays tend to be that, I'd imagine.

Also, I'd use little tricks to squeeze a little bit of extra length out: slightly larger fonts perhaps, and slightly smaller margins and slightly larger space between lines.

I still can't help but wonder why some have a minimum requirement and others have a maximum... it's just really bizarre, especially if you ended up with someone on both ends of the spectrum in the same set of classes.

The closest I ever get to limits is usually a minimum word limit, and only in Ethics. Even then, it isn't strict; if we can't get to that minimum, we just submit it anyway.
