How about the replayability of Sonic Generations?
I recall the older titles having huge-ass levels, like Sonic 3/S3&K for instance, so even a linear "A to B" was fun nevertheless. I see the problem for develeopers how they need to include some length, so the level isn't over in like 30 seconds when you go full speed, whenever possible - yet challenge the player. Of course, even outside a TAS you COULD just zip through many levels in less than a minute, though, if you know the way.

Might thinking about picking it up when the price drops, but first I'll need to get a gamepad. Although I'm used to play without one (although for the TGM3: TI pc leak people say that even the keyboard has considerable delay, so no way to practice Shirase, as the developers say there IS levels after 1400 ), keyboard was all the way. Having no Wii version sucks, but oh well, understandable if they don't want to sacrifice anything for it. Nothing against the Wii at all personally, but, yeah, you know the deal.

This part I definitely agree with. I don't enjoy Modern Sonic for the most part, I think it's too much focus on the square button.

Classic is still broken ... yet, somehow, it manages to be a bit fun when it's not scripting you through something you probably don't want to go through, like those two tubes at the start of Green Hill that lock your controls and force you to fly up into the path of rings... Ugh.

But I don't agree with this. I dont see how Classic is broken. The game handled perfectly I felt in classic mode, which I think is personally the best part of this game.

As I figured, the broken ring loss mechanics were there from the start, and indeed most (something like 90%?) of my deaths were from mechanics that kill you instantly. Not fun.

Like what? The only time I ever died in the game was when I jumped off the stage by accident or when I lost all my rings and was hit again.

The physics... they seem clunky and awkward. That spindash really is downright absurd. Jumping ... isn't as bad as I initially thought it would be. He doesn't seem that heavy after all. But the ramp physics are damn annoying and wrong; I wasted so much time trying to jump on ramps and being sent forward instead of backward.

So you mean it feels like Classic Sonic? The reason I like the games physics, is because it reminded me of Classic Sonic the Hedgehog. It wasn't as downright absurd as Sonic 4's was. I never had an issue with ramp physics and always jumped the way I wanted to go.

Kinda getting sick of falling through floors because the game fails at changing layers or something similar, as well. Yes, the classic games did it, but nowhere near this often. Damn you Crisis City...

I hated Crisis City too, but for different reasons. I didnt fall THROUGH a floor one time in the damn game, and I was pretty close to the edge on some jumps. I think your copy must have been bugged or something since when I played through it I never fell through a single floor.

The shield powerup is useful ... when it works. On at least three separate occasions I got hit with a shield and I _still_ lost rings anyway...

Again, not quite sure what you are talking about. When I lost my shield, I lost my shield. I didn't lose rings. I tried to avoid using shield anyway because it felt too gimmicky and I wanted to play Sonic, and not some watered down game with millions of power ups.

Super Sonic is absolutely useless. Ring drain is way, way faster than "one ring per second", it's hard to stay super for any decent length of time.

I can sympathize with this. . I also didn't like how it lasted all of like 20 seconds. But I digress, again, I play the games to play Sonic, not to blast through the levels as his Super Sonic Form.

You can't honestly tell me you beat crisis city modern holding the square button. That's a flat out lie.

Same with everything past City Escape, and it's hard to do in Sky Sanctuary (But not speed highway cause lol speed). Only the first couple levels focus on boosting, and then as they try to introduce platforming, they ween you off that and say "Okay, if you boost where there's lots of platforms, You're gonna get hit."

Also has anyone managed to land on that helicopter at the beginning of speed highway? I've lost like 50 lives trying.

Yeah, I watched my cousin go through Sky Sanctuary, no way you can boost through the whole thing, most time she disregarded square completely, and still got nearly A ranks the whole time. Boost is only there if you really want to go fast.

The point is, the greater majority of my deaths were to things that were instant kills, like pits. I almost always had one ring in hand just due to the nature of the game's mechanics.

Incidentally, this might be why this happens. (Snapped that from the video just below...)

It happened to me twice in Seaside Hill and once in Rooftop Run. Put on shield because I want to save rings, get hit by something, and lose them anyway. Ugh.

That's a legit complain although I can rarely see where jumping like that is beneficial. Most of the time if I want to go to the point you specified, I'd generally jump from the area beyond the ramp.

I must be blind, because the only time I saw you go through the floor was around the :03 mark. And you didn't go through, it effectively didn't hurt your speed run, unless I'm missing something.

Watch the very end (:40). I spindash on the beam, intending to go up the slope, and for whatever reason it would rather me fall through it down to a lower part of the level, then let me actually go UP it.

Oh I see your point now.

I don't know why it's affecting you, I never had that issue in game.

What platform was it done on?

I didn't get my review copy (boo) so I'm going to hold off until Xmas since there's so many games that I'm getting between now and then. But I really want to play it...

Now that I'm almost done with it, I feel qualified in saying "Holy shit, this game is amazing." Easily the best Sonic in recent memory, and that's speaking as someone who loved the hell out of Colors.

The thing that catches my eye the most about this game is the sheer number of paths in each level. I want to replay every stage and just see every single way I can possibly beat it, because I've skipped giant sections of level because I took a different path after I died. D: I want to see it all.

Also...

Honestly, dying to non-instant deaths (enemies, spikes) in a Sonic game is a pretty foreign concept to me, because it's so goddamned easy to hold on to at least one ring. Saying "I fell into too many pits" or "I was crushed by too many things" in a Sonic game is kinda like saying "I got killed via bullets in CoD too many times." It's damn near the primary means of death in the series. Unless it's a boss fight where you don't get rings, the biggest threat is either a hole or a crushing roof.

So after playing this for a while.

It's fun, it's not without flaws, but it sure as heck is fun. Even if the last boss is sorely disappointing, the bosses leading up to it are mostly a blast.

Also, Rooftop Run Modern is the best stage, by far.

Let's talk about Sonic Generations for the 3DS.

I long for the days when video game press will do their jobs and review all versions of games with the same name rather then just assuming it's the same game and just press out one review.

I need to know, how is the quality/gameplay of the 3DS version, both alone and compared to the main version.

Bought Sonic Generations 3DS today.
Initial impressions are, it's not as bad as I was expecting. Classic Sonic feels pretty good (except after the first three acts they give him a homing attack ) and Modern Sonic plays like Sonic Rush, which isn't too bad.
More amazing remixed music, too.

Radical Highway, the first loop doesn't work properly, if you don't have anything in your boost meter you basically have to kill yourself to get past it. Almost all of the loops are broken, and then there's a platforming part tossed in, which I died 4 times on, because Modern Sonic has pretty slippery controls. Add in the fact that I've lost all my speed coming down off a loop, and it's starting to seem pretty broken. Then there's the not-so-quicktime events where you need to boost or die, basically, with a sign telling you to boost a half second before you hit the ramp.

The game's got tons of replay value, 100 missions in all, but yeah, wait for it to come down in price, not worth it for $40, IMO.

Radical Highway is frustrating to the point of rage-quitting, sometimes enemies literally drop on top of you. I have yet to get past that level, but the rest is decent.

I read that the 3DS version got less levels though, which brings up another question, is the game long enough to be worth it?

I mean, I can just pick up the PC version instead since I will be playing from home. (Though, on the same time I want something for my 3DS to play... :eyeshift2 So I felt the need to ask around a bit more.

I know what you said before, but I figured since the game have been out for a while maybe you have more to say now, plus others may have things to say!

Personally from what I've seen (not played), between the 3DS and Steam versions, the Steam Version is better.

It may be that I dislike the 3DS, and why wouldn't I when half the good games so far seem to be remakes of older games :/

(Note, I haven't tried anything on the 3DS because it gives me a headache)
