I used Netscape back in the day. Then, around 2002 my parents had me use IE on their computer instead, to keep my bookmarks and passwords and such separate from theirs. I used IE until 2004 when I switched to Mozilla, which became Firefox, which I still use today.

First one was this AOL browser, then Netscape, Internet Explorer, and then Firefox.

Of course now I'll use Chrome and Opera if Firefox is being fussy or I just don't want to reopen it and have TABS EVERYWHERE

Shit, we kept using OS 9-powered Macs until I left, in 2005. I think by then they had a few OS X-based ones, but I only ever got to use them once and it kind of threw me off at the time. (I think they even had Puma or Jaguar... not the OS's finest days.)

I can't help but wonder if they actually still use those machines, or when they stopped using them if at all. It wouldn't shock me very much if they either didn't change or only recently did so.

When I was finally let surf the net we were on Microsoft's ISP and could only operate their "MSN" browser at the time. Eventually we went to IE when they got rid of the shitty MSN Browser.

I had heard of Netscape but never used it. My cousin did and claimed it was 'incredibly slow", but his machine also sucked anyway.

When I started attending MLC I learned about Firefox and started to use it instead.
Heard about Chrome and found it was useful for quick info hunts, and now I use Firefox and Chrome. Though mostly Firefox.

Oh, and I did use Safari for a short time on my friend's Mac, before I crashed the OS really hard.

@Bloodstar:
Ha. Bump it up a year and I'd say the same thing. In fact, I recall there being a few iMac G3s as recent as a year and a half ago.

...

I also used iCab 2.9.9 once or twice in a 68k Mac emulator (Basilisk II), but I couldn't do much as I had to type in an IP address in order to access any website. That might have been because of some lack of knowledge though. If I were to try again, I might be able to access the internet through actual URLs.

Probably didn't give it a proper DNS server. Try something like Google's DNS server and manually enter it and see what happens.

Netscape > Mozilla > Firefox

I've always had Mozilla in my blood! Although admittedly I'm using chrome at work...

Well, I don't have a copy of Basilisk II with me, but I do have a copy of Sheepshaver. I installed iCab 3.0.5 and Classilla 9.2.3. Both browsers were somewhat sluggish, even with 512 MB installed. But that was expected. I was able to set it up and get it working through a guide on eMaculation. Thanks for your suggestion, but Mac OS 9 wanted me to type in the subnet mask and router address too.

From a five minute test:
Jul looks nice in both browsers. TCRF wasn't that bad either. Google was also usable, but iCab was definitely less nice looking. The irony is that Microsoft's website displays way better than Apple's website (although it is usable in Classilla). iCab displaying Apple's website looks horrific, since the images don't display correctly even with millions of colors.

ADDENDUM:I tried running iCab in Basilisk II a few years ago, before I was even aware of eMaculation or any other site focused on Mac Emulation.

I wonder about using those older browsers today- I assume IE5.5 has many known security issues, but on the hand, how many people still bother to try to hack IE5.5 users?

That's only a little more data.

And whatever your router is, if you have one--you can copy it off of your current computer's properties into there.

(It is sometimes referred to as 'Gateway' instead of router, too)

I think they're sluggish due to PPC emulation being... kinda slow to begin with. As far as I'm aware, it only emulates a 100mhz PowerPC G4... and they didn't even exist. (Lowest-clocked G4 to exist was 350mhz, I believe...)

I'd imagine even running these browsers on a proper G3 running Mac OS 9 would be way faster, and forget comparing it to an upgraded G4 at 1.8ghz...

Of course, my Apple machines can only run OS X... not that I'm complaining, but it is a bit of a shame I can't really experiment too well with pre-OS X PPC software.

Hmm...
99→00/01 — Sympatico-branded Netscape Communicator (or was it Navigator?)
01→04 — Internet Explorer 5.0/6.0, mixed with Netscape Communicator and Mozilla
04→09? — Firefox 0.8 - 3.5, mixed with Netscape and IE 6
09→Present — Chrome, mixed with IE7,8,9, and a little bit of Opera and Firefox

AOL integrated and/or IE 4 to 6, then additionally Firebird/Firefox 0.x to 1.0.x, then pretty much exclusively Firefox 1.5 to (currently) 7.0.1 on desktop, 8.0.x Beta on laptop. Never even really "flirted" with ex. Opera or Chrome, I think.

I kinda miss the old Firefox versions' low memory requirements, though... I think 2.x worked flawlessly with 512 MB or so of RAM even for extended periods of usage, while everything 3.x and higher keeps hogging more and more memory the longer it runs. This instance is at 270 MB right now...
