My co-worker encountered this server at our place of work:

... Can anyone tell me what's wrong with this picture?

That despite having an ungodly process count (141? seriously?), that server is apparently not at all loaded.

Is this a failover unit?

Nope, this unit is actively running as an IIS/SQL server which hosts a .NET application that an entire office uses.

I was just blown away by the fact that it has 24 cores and 23.5 gigs of RAM so that each processor gets less than 1 gig of RAM.

It's just a total waste of cores.

My machine used to be 512Mb per core till I upgraded.
Even then it didn't really optimize the system performance..

But regarding that post; I knew it had SOMETHING to do with the RAM.

"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

The Task Manager looks really weird like this. Why didn't they implement some kind of scrollbar for all the cores so you can see them properly?

Bet it has one of those crappy intel video cards that 'share' ram with the main allocation.

I suppose then you wouldn't have the "see all the cores at once" view, though...

Both my laptops are only dual-core, and I can't say I've run into many situations where "more cores" would have helped (versus "more speed"), except maybe certain MATLAB programs...

I couldn't help but wonder initially if that was actually 24 cores or just hyperthreading. (I know if I were to run 7 on this thing I'd probably see eight graphs, though.)

I've not really run into a situation where I needed a quad core yet on my new laptop, but I really do feel comfortable having the extra two cores. I'm not sure if an i7 is too much improvement over an i5 for the cost, but considering these are only offered with i7s... why argue?

#62
I have 4 cores and 4GB 3.25GB RAM, and I'd still get more/faster cores before RAM if I could

But each core shares the full RAM, so you can't just divide it like that ... unless you're talking about running many instances of a program and using all CPU cores before running out of RAM

That is sort of the scenario I was envisioning actually. The computer is capable of computing more than it can remember.

Edit: Was apparently distracted and not reading what you said that I quoted. I'm thinking this computer will run out of RAM before it can actually use all of its cores, thus making them a waste of hardware.
