It's bad enough when people decide to text you versus call and rack up at least 20 cents for a back and forth that may not take more than about 30 seconds in a call, but at least the ones who have brains will understand why someone like myself may prefer people calling me versus texting once I tell them of my $rape/text.

But once some goddamn telemarketer texts for some bullshit, then rage is induced.

Rage has been induced.

I get this every once in a while.

Only mildly irritating, since it's relatively rare still... but I get the depressing feeling that it'll start picking up.

I remember getting a lot of spam texts around the time of the Senate election ("Martha Coakley will raise your taxes! Click this link, because apparently we just assume people have not only text but data plans now"), haven't gotten any lately though...

The FCC would like to hear your complaint.

Your phone company would not like to hear your complaint, but you might be able to extract a refund from their huge pile of text message profits. (For reference, you are being charged $1,310 per megabyte to use the little bit of extra space in the idle packets that constantly go between the phone and the cell tower.)

The telemarketers would love to hear your complaints, since it gives them an excuse to contact you again.

I have Tracfone (cheapo prepaid service) and I used to constantly get texts reminding me to buy more minutes. Even if I had like 900 minutes left.

I don't like texting much because I only have a numeric keypad so it takes forever.

In Europe you don't pay to receive calls or texts. It's great! You do pay to receive calls if you're roaming in another country, but that's to be expected. You don't have to answer anyway.

Telemarketing seems to be non-existent, too. I've had a prepaid phone number from Yoigo (Spanish provider) since the start of October and I haven't received a single marketing text or call - from them or anyone else.

Not complaining at all.

For $0.20/message? I knew it was pretty ridiculous (over $100-250) but haha, oh wow.

I use Koodo Mobile (Canada) and I rarely ever get telemarketers. I did for a while, when I had an alternative SMS app on my phone (Blackberry) but that stopped as soon as I uninstalled it.

As a matter of fact, my last text from Koodo was them telling me my data plan was upgraded from 500mb to 2gb, for free. Not complaining.

The amazing thing about this is that it costs the cell-phone providers essentially nothing, since your phone has to be in communication with the tower anyway, and if the tower is saturated the messages will just be delayed anyway... yeah.

20 cents per message is ridiculous. Do you pay that to receive them, too... or is receiving them less?

I pay 8 euro cents plus tax (works around to 13 US cents) to send a message to any national/international number, and nothing to receive them.

It's ironic that whereas phones (and most other electronics) are more expensive in Europe than in the US, for service it's the reverse.

My data plan costs €8 a month plus tax (so around $13) for 500mb per month of high speed access. It's throttled to 64kbps after that, but I don't pay any extra. North American prices are just... what the fuck.

20 cents recieving and sending.

Essentially the moment I start using up more than $2 a day I'm switching back. But right now there's not really all that much I can do aside from switching to Tracfone, and I'll probably won't do that for a while.

And if I do, then awesome, mom has a phone now. I think. Can I have AT&T have my phone become my mom's phone?

Yeah. It sucks major ass.

Calls are 10 cents a minute though, which is why I prefer that over 20 cent texts any day. No back and forthing that eventually costs $2 when the entire conversation can be made at 10 or 20 cents.

Considering that the point of text messaging is supposed to be, say, to leave a quick note to someone without having to call them... the fact that a call is cheaper is really fucked up.

At least free text messaging services exist for those who need to use them more extensively... but those only work if you have a data plan.

I wish cell phone service didn't have to be such a clusterfuck.

...Waaait ... Political text message spam?

Physical mail isn't too bad, you can just throw it out... but good lord, that's just gross. Hopefully it was just unofficial stuff (it could happen) - though, again, I've my severe doubts about that.

The funny thing is that I had already voted (via absentee ballot) at that point anyway.
