So OSX decided to randomly break and cause things to go all screwy, most notably the ability to draw the desktop. It also screwed up VMWare Fusion, causing it to fluctuate between crashed and not crashed, and then suddenly magically fixing itself as if it had been fine the whole time. As in, from completely deactivated to up-and-running in a single frame. What is going on?

Weird.

Out of curiosity, which machine do you have? If you're having graphical issues frequently and your machine has an 8600M GT... I'd advise getting your machine looked at. As far as I remember, if your graphics chip is failing and you have said chip, Apple will probably repair it for free even without a warranty.

It's a 2007 MacbookPro (dun dun dunn) with exactly that graphics card (not the original, Apple replaced it for the reason you mentioned). However, this is the first time it's done something like this, and it wasn't really a hraphics problem. It was more like OSX had a stroke and forgot how to function properly. Trying to click a link in Safari crashed it, and when I loaded it back up, it was completely missing the address bar and the actual webpage part. Other programs were completely missing parts or randomly crashing, even after I fixed the main issue by repeatedly restarting Finder and Dock.

Well, if it keeps up acting strange, you might want to get it checked out anyway. Also, a symptom might be the PCIe lane width being reported as x1 instead of x16. I just generally hear a lot of bad about the pre-Unibody models...

I recently had to buy a MacBook Pro for myself, and even though I did consider used models I made especially sure to avoid any with that chip. (I ended up just getting an early 2011 model ... which got updated six days later, but only a minor speed bump save the low end one which actually got a really nice upgrade.)

(Also, out of curiosity, which version of the OS are you using?)

I bought a Tamagotchi Mini yesterday on eBay. They're basically a simplified version of the original Tamagotchi complete with most of the original characters and the unit itself is reduced in size, perfect as some sort of pendant. I picked colors that would match the colors I was picking for the winter—blue and red as a salute to the color scheme of Wes Anderson's hipster salute of a film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou—but of course I'll wear it all year. It's got some of the more modern Tamagotchi features, too, like legit genuine no-clock-stopping-involved pausing and it's pretty low maintenance unlike the vintages that become super-needy with age. The necklace will uniquely declare who I am and what sort of things I stand for (Tamagotchi) and you will know you're dealing with Sofi because she's one of the few people if not the only person quirky enough to wear a Tamagotchi as a fashion piece and a toy and self-aware enough to color match it with her outfits.

It won't come in the mail until like halfway through the month, though, sadly, sigh.

Try checking for dust if it's a desktop. It makes an enormous difference, trust me - especially if getting in to dust it out has escaped you for a while.

Desktop, and that's what I was thinking, the same thing's happened before, but not this bad.
