I have a bit of a problem. I bought some vinyl a couple days ago, and -- to my horror -- side 2 of Operation Mindcrime has apparently had some drink (probably beer) spilled on it.
Needless to say, this causes a fair bit of skipping.
So I was wondering how one would go about cleaning this poor ol' record up. Obviously I'm screwed if there are any scratches, but a quick inspection seems to say that it's only dirt and crap in the grooves.
Thanks for any advice,
--Troy

The best thing would be to get a hold of someone with a record washer. Since those can be expensive they are hard to find.
1. Record Cleaner - I don't know if it would dissolve the beer, but it's worth a shot.
2. Anti-Static Record Brush - Works for dust really well. I always have one of these with my Vinyl collection. (Won't work for beer/pop though)
3. DYI Cleaning - Not tried this myself but I would say this is your best bet. It's cheap, and easy. (BE CAREFUL of the labels of course)
Hopefully that helps you out. I collect vinyl as one of my hobbies so I've collected a lot of info. |

I just tried the DIY cleaning method. Right after I dried it off, all the stains and such came back. No difference in skipping and popping at all.

Sorry to bump, but give this a try?
I apologize in advance if this pic is way too huge. I'm on my cell phone :/

I'd be weary to try it myself but I can see how that would work. I just wouldn't do it on your main turntable, and I would try it on a throw-away record from the thrift store first. However I'm a cautious type. |

I would definitely try it on some vinyl that was more on the expendable side. Or, like you said, go buy a record at a local thrift store. I'm sure you can get one for next to 25ยข.
