At work yesterday I was trying to install SQL 2005 Express on a customer's computer. It got through most of the install, but then failed with the following error: 'The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually.'

I fumbled around a bit looking for issues and tried a few suggested solutions. That didn't help, so I tried installing SQL 2008 R2 Express. When that didn't work either, I noticed that although the customer had told me they were running Windows 7, my Bomgar remote client told me they were running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I opened the system properties dialog and was surprised to see this:

Turns out it's a hacked version of XP distributed by someone in Cairo, Egypt. Google led me to this five part video series in which a couple guys install "Windows 7 Genius Edition" on a VM. It's somewhat amusing, and it's located here.

Note that it's an "operation system" and not an operating system.

There are a lot of these distributions floating around. I've been a long-time subscriber to danooct1 and rogueamp on youtube and saw this a while ago when they put together a combined account to review weird things. Apparently this "Windows 7" doesn't do anything obviously malicious, but still -- there's no way I'd ever consider using it outside of a virtual machine.

Wow. That's...hilariously stupid. Did it come preloaded with those Mega Man graphics? Did the guy have even the slightest clue his OS wasn't genuine?

New Version of Windows Operation System

Design New, Modern and innovative

Oh god that is so pathetic. And people actually believe that this is genuine?

A friend of mine visits Syria every so often; he says it's easier to find pirated software (and other cheap knockoffs) than it is to find the real thing.

I don't know for sure, but I think things are similar in Egypt.

Sure. Most people just simply don't know enough or know better.

Could you identify a genuine fender guitar for example? A genuine version of an artwork?

I mean, not saying this is a very good mod but unless you're well in touch with what's going on it's entirely excusable.

I love Danooct1 and RogueAmp's stuff. This OS hack is hilarious.

Yes, it did come pre-loaded with the Mega Man graphics, and no, he had absolutely no idea. They had some kid his wife knows "upgrade" their Windows XP for them by installing this. If you watch the YouTube video you will see that there are more Mega Man graphics during the install (and a few typos, too).

I'm guessing all it has to it are those graphics, or does it actually do anything Windows 7 should do?

Nothing that the real version can do better.

Also, according to the video, that fake OS is like a hybrid between Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

But I'm wondering just how a couple managed to think that Windows 7 Genius Edition was legit with all those spelling errors and crappy images, not to mention web pages set up to their Egyptian counterparts?

I mean they could've done a quick look online to see if they even had a real version Microsoft put out. But they didn't!

If they didn't notice and their Internet Explorer works to check their Facebook and HotMail, I doubt it matters to them as long as it's Window computering system.

It'll matter to whoever has to "put the thing that is blue and blue on the thing" though.

Just read this for some reason... But actually it's from a remote support session so the colors look bad.
