So basically I can't sync it because it'll delete everything (since, you know, I imported the music that wasn't on the iTunes Store because, you know, it wasn't on there), and I can't update it because it'll delete everything.


Please explain to me why people love kissing Apple ass? I love how I've been punished because I dared to want to use something I have the way I want it.

Not personally a big Apple fan for the most part. I do love my iPod, though (although I'll admit that's probably because iPods are the only MP3 players I've ever used, so I'm super used to the interface), and haven't had any real trouble with any of the iPods I've had over the years on any of the PCs I've had over the years (save for a few glitches, but nothing like this).

Maybe it's an iPad thing?

Probably more about iOS devices. I think if you purchase one with iOS 5 it's possible to use without syncing it to a computer, though I'm not sure offhand (and not really willing to buy another one to find out when my current one's doing just fine)

I wouldn't dare use a music-only iPod with iTunes - there's Floola for that, and other such things. Alas, can't get around it on a Touch.

I'm still waffling on whether I should bother getting iOS 5 and syncing it to my new laptop. At least on OS X iTunes is a decent music player...

You tried using CopyTransManager? That will allow you to upload without syncing. The new version installs this whole suite of crap, though, so use the old standalone version. I think this link is the standalone version. You need to have Itunes drivers installed, which you can do by installing Itunes or by downloading the CopyTrans driver utility.

But yeah, I've just about had enough of Apple's crap myself. I have an unlocked iPhone that I've been using as an iPod. The power button broke on it, and now if it freezes I have to wait days for the battery to drain. It's currently frozen right now due to my work computer's USB problems. If only I could just take out the damn battery. Opening the case is a pain in the ass and I'm pretty sure the battery is soldered on anyway.

Meh, you just have to learn how to get around these issues. I had my iPod touch wiped a few times because I didn't actually sync my songs, I just put them on the iPod manually. But any time it wanted to sync, it wanted to erase all my songs. So now I just put my playlists in iTunes and have it sync them instead of just putting them on manually. Works fine. You can add any music you want to your iTunes sync list, I have over 1700 songs and only 5-10 we're purchased through iTunes. But yes, you do have to sync it with one computer.

We put up with iTunes because Apple makes the best mobile devices. Nothing comes close to the iPhone 4(S or not) or the iPad. Other devices have this or that, but as the saying goes "It just works". It's the simplest and smoothest device out there.

I never understood the point of the Shuffle. Just seemed like a really dumb idea to me.

Also, my phone is an HTC (EVO Shift), and I love it to bits. I doubt I'd like an iPhone nearly as much.

iTunes on Windows is atrocious. It's slow because it forces the Leopard-esque appearance on you despite the fact that you're ... y'know ... running Windows. Part of it is Apple's "walled garden" mentality obviously; you can only sync a device with one computer, but also they are under a lot of pressure to curb file sharing by all those oft-mentioned regulatory agencies, and some of the partial licenses Apple has been granted for various technologies in their devices don't allow for certain uses either.

You can still force-allow a sync without first wiping the device by grabbing the "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Music Library.itl" files from the original computer you already synced with, but ... you'd obviously need access to the original computer first of all, and it still wouldn't let you transfer music from the device back to the computer without a jailbreak. Syncing an empty library from the computer back to the device would end up deleting the stuff on the device anyway.

So basically ... yup, boned.

I'd include a small bit about how Apple stuff in my experience has "just worked" for me 99% of the time, but I'm too lazy to go into detail, the responses I'd get would probably be like "well whoop-de-doo for you, shut up," and this doesn't seem like the right place to go into that anyway.

Oh god no, I don't think anybody would do that. I will admit, when I first got my iPhone, it was pretty amazing. It's just the novelty wore off when the phone started lagging, the touch-screen stopped working at times and hell, iTunes. But I do think that Apple products aren't a bad way to go.
