I saw the crash on TV before they announced his death, pretty brutal. I'm honestly surprised that no one else passed away due to it.

To be honest, so am I.

I didn't watch the race; I initially heard of it on 4chan /sp/ after reading through their World Series thread.

I don't normally ban for offsite behavior but you're a whole level of terrible.

I'm not really into racing, so I saw it on Yahoo!

That's surprisingly lucky only one person died, but unfortunate all the same. You couldn't pay me to be an Indy Car driver.

While the loss of life is always a tragedy, these drivers know the risks when they get in that car and accelerate to speeds in excess of 200mph. I feel sorry for the family and their loss, I believe he and his wife had a baby earlier this year.

I'm sure from this crash there will be many new safety regulations put in place. For starters, Indy cars aren't designed for high bank tracks, like the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It has a 20° bank compared to the 9° banked turns found at Indianapolis. But the safety regulators deemed this track safe enough to race on anyway. And Indy cars have always been designed to be light weight, which affords less room for safety design.
