The videos are disgusting, yes. Shows we're no better than Iran or Libya.

As much as I want the protest to turn into a national movement, it's unlikely to happen, especially not with those numbers. The NYC metropolitan area has 3 times the number of people as Libya and a third of that of Iran's.

Yeah. The only way to really force their hand is to have so many protestors that the police have to back off entirely.

Unfortunately people are still asleep about their rights, so I don't see it happening any time soon.

Wait, there's a protest going on? This is the first I've heard of anything. What's it all about?

It's not a surprise that many people don't know, the media has barely covered it at all.

The fact is (and I hate saying this sort of thing because it makes me sound like an anti-government paranoid) that the police don't care about rights. Rights exist in a courtroom, to be hashed out at a later date...

I wonder if some members Anonymous might look into the NYPD's closet over this.

Mass carpools to NYC being organized on Facebook

I'm going there myself by bus but on October 1st ... I'll join if it's still going on by then.

Wow... no wonder the media doesn't want to cover it. Because then more people would join in.

Still, it's surprising to hear about a protest like this. I'm very curious to see where it goes.

The revolution will not be televised.

Oh, and they're cutting off cell networks now. This should go over real well.

No cell phone service or wireless internet on Wall Street? Yeah, good luck with that.

Well yes. That's what I mean though. A massed force of people too big for the police to contain. Then someone will have to answer them. They have their choice: use the National Guard and look like the nation is unstable, or actually address what's going on.

But this is all fantasy. The real civil rights marches don't seem to happen anymore. Perhaps in another generation, maybe?

There's a number of reasons people could be arrested for at these protests. Loitering, disturbing the peace, breaking the public sound level ordinance, jaywalking, public drunkeness, littering (have you seen what the ground looks like around wall street lately because of these demonstrations?), harassment of stock brokers, etc. There are plenty of minor crimes that these people are likely committing that the police normally never respond to but are being pressured to now by their superiors. It's only natural too, once you bring attention to yourself, skeletons will come out of the closet so to say.

So just because people are being arrested doesn't mean that the government is out in full force silencing them. They're probably being picked up on minor things and it's just an illusion of tyranny. However, shutting down cell phone networks seems a bit overkill in terms of getting these people out of the streets and back to work.

In the end, I see no changes to the way things work transpiring from this. People will lose interest and forget or aren't motivated enough to go out and protest. This is only minorly inconveniencing the people the protestors are trying to shut down at best and probably will do likewise once this gets into full swing.

Also, to the people who are carpooling across the country hoping that this will fix the economy... what about their jobs? I'm sure up and leaving to sit in the street without the boss' blessing will only make the economy worse as fewer people come to work and less stuff gets done.

edit: I suck at words

It's also worth mentioning that apparently we got our own local branch, too, Occupy Las Vegas. Can't say I'll be joining in, but at least KSNV (also known as "Channel 3" ) covered it for a while.

Apparently there's people around where I live wanting to occupy too..

I saw there were posters that got tore down the next day.

I guess uh... this isn't the best place for that really, considering it's the richest city in the richest province in all of Canada. I don't have a job, but I'm probably able to get one. :V

And while I agree with the reform sentiments... It's mostly just hippies camping outside of wall street at this point. Organized protests tend to go better because if you submit documents the cops can't legally touch you and they tend to not be people who are just mad and breaking the law!

They need to take a page from the old marches and just continuously hold events like back in the last era of Civil Rights protests.

Occupying a place indefinitely won't work entirely. People can just get used to the encampments. People on the other hand have a harder time ignoring it if all traffic gets shut down from massive organized marches continually wandering down their streets.

I find it difficult to understand your comparison of an inane, booze-powered one-night riot with a month-strong generally-peaceful organized protest.
