I don't think it's so much mainstream, it's that society is far more accepting of lesbianism than it was 15 years ago. Up until recently I was pretty turned off at the idea of dating another girl but now it's like "What was the big deal again?"
That said, my relationship isn't much of one. We go out for dinner on Wednesdays and share the same room, but that's about it. There has been very little physical or romantic contact, but we call each other girlfriends anyways.
