I never like these news stories. The focus is really on the mental issues of the people; things like this happen all the time, but they report it JUST BECAUSE it has Facebook in it. Despicable.

I think it's being reported like this precisely because it's ridiculous. Who would care to read an entire article about "man gets robbed for having money, was injured by robber"? With mundane stories like that, as bad as they might be, there's not much to say more than the summary. But when a nut goes and does something like this because of something petty, that's where you can get people interested. The same exact kind of attention is given to stories about criminals who do stupid stuff to get caught, but those might not stand out to you as much because it doesn't mention Facebook or something similar.

The news just likes to use the catalyst as the sole, singular reason. Notice how mental issues are never brought up until later.

Obvious? Yeah, but still. If we're not grabbing people's attention, we're not making money to stay telling the news! Ugh.
