That poll Coz made there was relatively poor. This has been remedied.

His poll makes me wonder: do any of these "popular" games actually interest the average Jul member? I get the feeling they really don't. Of course, a poll is needed to tell the true opinion--one which allows one to pass ALL of those games, as so many people noted, rather than just one.

Also, what do you think of "Popular" games?

I think they're just over-hyped, over-worked versions of the average game. They aren't better, they aren't worse, they're just given more press because it is culturally expected that they should "succeed"... even when they don't.

The only game I'm even remotely interested in is Dark Souls, and that's more of a spiritual sequel to Demon's Souls, which I already have and have not played through so I should play through it before trying to buy Dark Souls.

The rest of the games can bite me. Four shooting games and a realism racer? Nnnnneh.

This is another stupid poll because who cares if a game is popular or not? I can't afford to buy a lot of games so my choices are limited and some games have higher priorities over other ones based on my interests.

As for why they are popular, it is all part of the media and advertising. They are told before release that they are great games and they get good reviews so people go out and buy them and play them. Months later, the same media says the same games suck because other new games are coming out and then you have to go out and buy the next big hit title just for the process to repeat itself.

A game isn't good based on being popular or not. Dark Souls is a good game. Forza 4 is a good game. Saints Row: The Third is going to be a WONDERFUL game. Skyrim shows a lot of promise, especially with a modding scene. It is just that buying these 4 games already puts me in spending over $200 and that alone is reason not to buy any of them when I know games like Skullgirls is coming out as well as the upcoming Steam sales and a TF2 Halloween update which will probably include many new items I may purchase.

For me, I can't say. It all depends on if I feel a game is worth picking up. In fact, the new Driver game actually looks appealing and I would probably pick that up over Forza 4 because it looks silly as hell. I really want Saints Row: The Third though.

A number of those games mentioned certainly have their own merits in terms of storytelling and gameplay, but I just don't care for photorealistic war/car simulators or western fantasy. Give me an innovative, inspired Nintendo game any day! And like cpubasic said, who cares if it's popular or not? What really matters is whether or not you enjoy it.

I'll assume that the intended question is in the title, though.


As for me, I buy a number of "popular" games, but I never buy them because they're popular. Just like any game, I make sure to look up what they're like before I decide if they are for me or not.

Hm, for the specific games listed, I don't have anything that I'd play modern games on other than my 3DS, so I feel like that probably rules most of those out? (It looks like MW3 will be on DS, but FPS's aren't my particular area of interest...)

On the other hand, my next planned videogame purchase is Super Mario 3D Land, and if a Mario game doesn't count as a "popular" game I don't know what does.

Short answer: No except Kirby/Zelda/Sometimes Pokémon

Long answer: I can very rarely buy games. Purchasing one is a rather important decission. So I'll pick one of a higher priority.
This has the side-effect of buying games when their hype is gone.

There's also how obscure titles tend to attract me too with how innovative their designs tend to be, but that brings some discussion about what is and isn't "obscure" and "innovative" that I don't really want to bother with.

And THEN there's doujin/indie stuff that's generally about all I play/catches my interest nowadays.


But, in the sense and the kind of "popular games" you meant with this thread, I can very much say that no, none of the stuff that falls in that sort of context interests me in the least.

Considering the only games I play these days are WoW, Minecraft and Pokemon here and there, I'd say yes. However, both are quite old and very established, so I guess I just buy into stuff that still has replay value after a year.

Edit: I just noticed the poll question. If those are classed as popular, then change my previous answer to "No, I don't buy popular games".

I think, rather than trying to classify games that are "popular" and buying those, I just buy ones that interest me. So I have a pretty wide variety, not all of which I play. Though to say some of them are popular would be a joke...

I'm quickly losing interest in high-profile online multiplayer titles recently (I have a feeling I may do the same with BF3, even with the Back to Karkand pack with the Limited Edition preorder). I may take the plunge in Skyrim if the price goes down (since it's single-player only), and the same is said for Forza 4 and Saints Row 3. I just ain't paying the full value unless there's a decent bonus for preordering.
