My master drive failed and my computer can no longer boot into windows. I knew this might happen eventually, but this is kind of also to say I might not be around much for awhile. I'd like to access files on other drives somehow though. its a sony vaio dunno the year.

Accessing files on other drives is pretty easy if you can plug them into another computer. If not, try a Linux live CD such as this or this.

First, figure out if the drive still works and it isn't just corrupt data. If a live CD can find your Windows files, you may only need to repair the bootloader rather than replace the drive.

If you're already sure it needs replacing, you need to figure out what kind of hard drive to get. To do that, either look up your laptop's specs or take out the bad drive. On most laptops, taking out the drive is pretty easy: look for the screw or screws labeled with a funny icon like on this Gateway laptop. Take off the cover, unscrew the drive if it's screwed down, and gently slide or lift it out.

Your replacement needs to be either PATA (the kind that has a whole bunch of pins) or SATA (the kind that has significantly fewer pins). Keep in mind that replacement laptop PATA drives are very expensive compared to SATA, and it may not be worth your while to get a new one.

already figured outwhat it needs. desktop PATA.

What do you guys do to secure yours against foreign particles? my computer is still in the kind of housing it came in, panels and all, but is there more that can be done besides avoiding static and giving it a few good blasts of canned air once in awhile? Just if you got ideas.. the old drive actually expired its warranty in 2005, so the reaper was probably calling for it anyways.

Paulguy's Post configuration
As a mechanical device, it's just subject to natural wear. Temperature extremes/major temperature changes should probably be avoided. So just make sure it's not overheating, because that'll shorten the lifetime. Other than that, not much you can do other than not use it, and various other obvious stuff (don't drop/shock, don't get it wet, etc.). It's up to the build quality, use pattern and a good bit of luck, mostly.

this may sound silly, or thought provoking: can rubber gloves be employed to protect the drive during handling? (my work area is on a carpet

Paulguy's Post configuration
Rubber gets fairly staticy so probably not a great idea. You won't really cause "wear" by static discharge. A static discharge, if it does any damage, will probably be seen right away (though it might cause weird behavior without complete failure.). You probably got as much life out of that drive as it was going to get, really.

Well, he only had a 7 hour window. Had he not told you after you used them, you might continue to use them and actually damage something.

Actually you want an anti-static wrist strap, not rubber gloves. So keep that in mind.
