"The original Final Fantasy VII is widely known for the many secrets left behind in its code. However, by using a field editor anyone can view the game’s used and unused script. This series of articles will present to the reader, in addition to entertaining commentary, all the unused text in the game in an order vaguely representing a normal playthrough; starting with the bombing of the Mako Reactor, continuing up to the final confrontation with Sephiroth, and ending with coverage of the debug rooms."

Nice stuff here. That cutscene with the giant Sephiroth is awesome. I was curious why that cutscene in the truck to Nibelheim crashed specifically after that line, which I thought was strange. I was also curious as to why Cloud was getting up from off the ground in the alternate version of the secret hideout cutscene. Funny how everything all fits now.
Also lol at the "I hate Barrett" line. What the hell were they thinking?
Keep them coming! This stuff is incredibly interesting.
EDIT: Also not really related to this project in particular, but it's amazing that people found where the unused Comical.mid was supposed to be used in the game played with the PSX instruments and everything. I hope that maybe you find some other really awesome stuff buried in the game like this. |

Really loving all this info. I'll give FFVII this much-- the devs did an excellent job at World Building. Even if not my first RPG, it's one of my favs.
Also, loving the Poor Shinra Manager video. Excellentè =P |

| This is fantastic stuff. Brings me back to when I wrote the original debug guides for this and Xenogears on Gamefaqs, although I embarrassingly I never found the cut scenes. It's terrifying that was 12 years ago now! |

A guide to the debug rooms, you mean?
I actually retranslated all the debug room text from the Japanese version of FF7, since the English version's text appeared to be at least partially translated by someone who didn't speak English.
A lot of references, silly jokes, and general context were lost in the official translation.
If you're interested, check it out here.

| Yeah I saw, impressive stuff! Way back in my misspent youth I spent far too long writing a similar guide when the codes were first found. It's really cool to see that years later other people have done a far better job with everything translated properly and tons of things documented that I never even noticed at the time. |

In a new article on GlitterBerri, I track down a certain Final Fantasy VII developer to ask him about the unused Travelling Salesman side quest cut from the game. He also comments on the making of the highly acclaimed PSX title, and details his thoughts on why JRPGs are being derided today.
"These days, development staff have been focused on emphasizing their games’ presentation. Unfortunately, as a result, there aren’t any games being made that have the power to surpass FFVII. As hardware improves, it becomes very difficult to create JRPG-type games, so I think that’s one of the reasons JRPGs have been criticized as outdated and stale by the American game media. (Certainly, much as it pains me, I can’t help but observe that present-day Final Fantasy doesn’t compare to the visuals and real-time aspect of games like Uncharted and Call of Duty.)”
(The letter is at the bottom of the page, following an introduction to the unused sidequest.)
Read what he has to say here!
