So I decided to see if I could find some of my friends on Facebook, for reasons that would take too long to explain. K, go to Search, put their name in, and... nothing useful. 5 results, with a "lol sign up for the rest" message. Yeah, it's one of those sites. So, reluctantly, I throw together some stupid fake account so I can actually use the site. The first thing I notice after registering is this:

No, that's not a mistake. They want you to enter the password to your email account, apparently so they can find people on your contact list. WTF? No thanks. *skip*

So I run my query again, and this time it gives me all 12 results, but still none of them are of any use. Here's a portion of the results page.

This is it. All the info they'll give you. A name, and if you're lucky a (usually bad) photo and a very general location. Your options: Send a message, "poke" them (which, as I understand, is basically another form of message), view their friends list, or add them to your friends list. Great! Way to be of no help whatsoever.

Facebook, apparently, is social networking for paranoid schizos. You have to be in the same "network" as someone else to view their profile, you have to be signed up to basically do anything at all, etc. I ended up just sending a message to each of these people (excluding "Mikko" and others who aren't an exact match) asking if they're the person I'm looking for. (I highly doubt it. V_v)

Oh, and one more little WTF: The "Poke this person" link. Sometimes it uses their name, other times it doesn't.

When I signed up, Facebook was a student/group-only site, so no highschoolers or random people allowed.

Theoretically, your "friends" would be either your classmates, people in the same school as you, or your real life friends who would tell you about their facebook or something.

I'm one of maybe five students at this college that doesn't have a facebook account.

One, I don't feel the desire to post pictures of myself, or even my full name for that matter, on the internet.

Secondly, I see how much time people can waste on the site. (I'd much rather waste my time here or on IRC )

Facebook is much smaller than MySpace and the other social networking site. Being added to a network is a way Facebook uses to protect privacy. Your MySpace profile can be viewed by anyone in its full glory. So, if someone were to stalk you on Facebook, people would have an idea of where this person is to begin with, for the most part.

*shrugs* I don't like MySpace because it is impossible to find anyone and seems a too cliche place. However, Facebook is starting to grow into MySpace too

You do know adding them to your friend list lets you see their profile? also if you are in a network as someone (same school etc) you can see their profile without adding them, unless this is disabled. Honestly that was the idea facebook was meant to be a school-based social network, it just kind of evolved but the concept remains the same..

I don't know why I put this here.
I prefer to speak to my friends on message boards and in real time on IRC, so this weird stuff never really meant anything to me anyway :p

I resisted Myspace after all.

Is it supposed to be hard?

I resisted ShitSpace uber easily. The sluttiness drives me insane.

I don't see how people get talked into it to begin with. "lol im' teh to passive im gunna do wut every1 els duz fur teh lulz."

Yeah no it doesn't work that way

Be unique, people.

Sometimes I wonder if my old high school friends would jump off a bridge if one of them suggested it to the others, and solely because they suggested it.

You're going to be annoyed when you actually WANT a Facebook account and you signed up for the fake dumb one.

I have a friend that keeps bugging me to sign up for Facebook. I've said no at least 20 times and I'm still not even close to wanting to sign up. I don't see the point of posting pictures of yourself, adding friends to your friends list that live three houses away, etc. I also never plan to join Myspace either.

I have a Facebook so I can keep in touch with all of my high school friends that I inevitably will not be able to see every day like before.

That and I'm at a different college than nearly all of my friends, so I use Facebook to keep in touch with them.

It helps in keeping touch with people you don't talk to every day and to see what they are up to every now and then.

All of my friends use some form of IM (most commonly MSN) so I find it's much easier to talk that way.

Myspace = never
Facebook = already have it.

It helps if I want to talk to people who never use MSN and I at the most see once a week. I mean, at the most, if you're not on their friends list, you can only see the small picture, and their school/general location.

Oh yeah, and HH, I noticed the email password thing when I signed up as well. I've been on Facebook since May, and I haven't seen any spam in my account yet, other than "said person sent you a message!" or "Said person wrote on your Wall!" even though you can turn those off on the website.

The only reason I have a MySpace is because my friend made one for me. That said, I never use it/look at it/give a damn about it. Facebook, I could care less about getting one. The people I talk to are all at school or I talk to online through messaging or IRC here.

In the very unlikely event that happens, I simply sign up again using my real email address instead of the one I never actually check.

I was against sites like those simply because it made people think they were "innovative" when all they really did was rehash old scripts and ideas together and make it popular.

I like plain message boards and chat much better, but I use myspace anyway because my friends are on there and its easy to keep in contact.
