The difficulty is that to make even the simplest things, you need massive rooms bigger than the end product just to get them to work.
I was hoping for redstone-esque things in Terraria, but after remaking a door that had three switches attached to it... no. Never again.
Edit: Testing out the pre-release with the same seed as a 1.8 world... the world generator got changed again. So 1.8 maps are going to look ugly as sin next to new 1.9 chunks that are generated. Great.
