Apparently a new craftable NPC is coming, a snowman. According to notch, he melts in deserts (which probably means catching on fire, which should be hilarious to watch) and throws snowballs at monsters. So yeah, don't make these when 1.9 comes out. They throw snowballs at CREEPERS which in turn go over to them and explode.

edit: hi, how do I remove my layout from this post? deleting the header and footer did bugger all.

I'll make hundreds just for entertainment purposes. I'll hide inside an obsidian bunker, watching.

Obviously the best course of action is to put the snowmen on watch towers so they distract all the mobs.

Side question: do endermen attack them?

I witnessed an Enderman rush and kill a Skeleton, so I imagine they would.

Evil mobs will now attack anything that attacks them, including other mobs. Skeletons are most likely to get into fights with other mobs, since they fire arrows and all.

Minecraft in general is a chore. Compare it to something like Terraria; there, the main focus is on getting a better character and equipment, which is usually done by exploring the (much more vast and open) caves, using the expanded view area to seek out patches of goodies, and engaging in better combat to get stuff needed for better weapons.

In Terraria, your equipment never breaks, so once you upgrade, you're always at that point. Your belongings don't drop when you die, you just revert back to your spawn area and lose half your money; combined with the limited inventory, you tend to make forward bases a lot, and dying could put those out of reach. Digging is also much faster, and things like bombs and dynamite have much more strength while being easier to use and much more potent.

In comparison, Minecraft is tedium given code. Even simple blocks like stone can take forever to break; caves are often fairly small, ores aren't plentiful at the beginning, and your tools break after a fairly small amount of use.

Even a diamond tool will break after a little above 1000 blocks, which, in a 3D game, is not a big number at all; just digging out a simple tunnel for 256 blocks in one direction will eat half of that, so any long-distance movement is difficult.

In addition, you lose everything when you die; enemies are ridiculously powerful, especially with easily-destroyed armor. Enemies also have only two real attacks: running at you for "touch of death" damage and firing a projectile at you. Creepers and Ghasts are really the only exception, and even then the former uses the same AI almost every other mob uses, it just happens to explode if the distance to you is small enough.

Digging is tedious because of the slow speed (why does obsidian take nearly a minute with the best pick in the game!?), the frequency at which picks break, and the rarity of the best materials; it's easy to break a diamond tool before you actually find any more diamonds to replenish it, and hahaha if you think your armor is going to last. (Bonus points for even simple things like a 3-block fall damaging your armor!)

Terraria is arguably better in almost every way; the only downside is that it's in 2D.

Actually, another thing Minecraft has going for it is, amusingly, the mod community. Terraria is more of a standard adventure-platformer Metroidvania in multiplayer goodness, but you can make Minecraft into a pretty complex building simulation.

My favorite so far was BuildCraft, RedPower, and IndustrialCraft (or whatever), which made it possible to build huge machines that automatically farmed and planted trees, turned those trees into charcoal, and then turned the charcoal into fuel for the huge automatic mining systems. It's sort of like Garry's Mod, except that in this case you can do a lot more with the world instead of just welding props together.

To that end, the default redstone implementation in MC is an absolute joke compared to RedPower. It's sad.

Minecraft has redstone, and the potential for some fantastic fucking shit with it.

I haven't really gotten around to playing Terraria that much (I am a scum for not doing this, I know : <) but it certainly seems to have nailed the "game"y part down.

I don't really feel like it's far too fair to judge them compared to each other, sure, Terraria seems to do what it does, better than Minecraft does what it does.

But I haven't really seen anything do what Minecraft does, better than what Minecraft does.

Because no one really does what Minecraft does when it comes to creativity from what I've seen.

It's why when playing Minecraft with people, I prefer servers where I can /give cheat my arse off for materials and build. It's just too tedious as you state to gather all the material.

Also, a creeper blew me up in my house, through a wall, when I was putting things away in my item chest.

Speaking of that server, I'll update it once all the binaries have updated as needed.

Though, even vanilla Minecraft has some pretty nice features getting added. The new farming mechanics are starting to shape up (though they unfortunately aren't done yet), and the new terrain generation is actually fun to explore. I've had a lot of fun building a combined fortress / farm, and the fact that passive mobs no longer despawn is a great boon.

But yes, one of the major points of Minecraft is the modding community.

Speaking of, someone mentioned it earlier, but I think my favorite indication of how ridiculous Minecraft can be at times is that it is often easier to make a boatload of buckets, go to your favorite lava pit, scoop up the steaming globs of molten Fun, and then place the lava with water to build structures of obsidian. As in, it's faster to do that than actually mining the obsidian.

:notch:

Yeah, that's pretty stupid.

If I had ONE complaint with minecraft, it's this: Every new version, they have tons of bugs, and they never actually fix them.

But yes, one of the major points of Minecraft is the modding community.

The problem with farms is that they're basically all the same. Wheat: Punch when brown, plant seeds. Melons: Plant seeds, punch when grown, right click dirt with hoe. Pumpkins: See melons.

The problem with this sort of thing is that there's no way to automate the process, even with "pistons" (which I have still not seen a real use for other than novelty "it's a house that self-repairs!" or "hidden doors"), since there's no way to get drops into a chest automatically.

Though on Kirb's server I did make a self-harvesting "sugar cane" farm, I guess. You flip the switch and the shover robots helpfully break all of the second-level stems for you (though it has about a 30% efficiency rate, the shit regrows so fast it doesn't matter)

We were joking last night that it'll be completely and utterly hilarious/awesome if it makes it all the way to 2.0 (whenever that is).

On another server I played, we had a mod to add "skills" which could allow for multiple items to be dropped and skills to be used for faster mining.

Let it be known: I liked building my obsidian fort. Was funny when griefers couldn't do shit to it, too!

IF the person who built it is offline for a reasonable amount of time, a dedicated griefer could still do a lot of damage.

I think the &e0 is there for nostalgia purposes at this point.

Anyways, I saw Xk mention IC/BC/RedPower and immediately thought of the unofficial Technic modpack that was made on the SA forums. It's absolutely amazing and extends the life of Minecraft like crazy. I'm going to copy in the guy's post about it because there's so much in the pack.

-----

I whipped up a little unofficial modpack for all you crazy people that want to get down and dirty with ultra-modded Minecraft. No minecraft files are included, these are MODS ONLY, coming at you without any adfly AND pre-configured to simply work.
I warn you, this modpack isn't for everyone and has a *LOT* of content.

I present THE MINECRAFT TECHNIC PACK VERSION 2

MOD LIST:
----------------------
Modloader

Modloader MP Unofficial

Minecraft Forge 1.0.6 - The coolest API

Industrial Craft 2 v1 (isn't complete and has a few industrial craft-only bugs)

Buildcraft 2.1.1 Complete Package - pipes, quarries, oil, engines, auto-sorting

RedPower 1.7.1 Complete Package - the whole damn thing with all the arrays and microblocks you can handle (seriously look at what can be done with just the microblock part of this mod, and it's meant to change redstone!)

Equivalent Exchange v3.53 - the endgame mod to end all endgame mods

Unofficial SDK's Mods - guns, turrets, scuba gear, night-vision, parachutes

Better Than Wolves v2.94 - mechanical power super mod

Mo' Creatures 2.12.2 - hit escape then 'global mod options' to configure

Millenaire 1.3.2 - now you aren't alone. SHIFT+CTRL+G to toggle village generation on/off

Somnia - sleep like you should

Biome Water - this water looks better I promise

Treecapitator - cut down trees properly

MAtmos 1.7.2 r4 - why this mod isn't a part of the base game I have no idea, ambient sound mod

Rei's Minimap 1.8 - best minimap, 'M' to change it's options

Risugami's Recipe Book 1.7.3 - you will need this, over 400 pages with all these mods

Convenient Inventory 1.9 - Another one that should be in the default game. Swap your entire inventory of dirt with 1 click, shift-click stacks all over the place!
--------------------------------------------

Follow the instructions and USE A BRAND NEW VANILLA MINECRAFT INSTALL because the mod files in this package are set to avoid block id conflicts.

Known bugs:
You can't craft the scuba tank because the recipe is the same as the Iron Furnace from IC2. Cheat yourself in one using an inventory editor, or try to get TMI to work with this pack and cheat it in that way.

-----

The pack requires a Minecraft 1.7.3 jar, it will not work with 1.8.1. If you download it, I highly recommend downloading the IndustrialCraft2 EquivalentExchange Recipes add-on so you have a bunch of alchemical recipes that work between IC2 and EqEx. Definitely give this a try if you're looking to extend your Minecraft games' life, I've been playing with the pack for days now and haven't touched upon all the aspects of it yet.
