Wouldn't it all just be easiest to copy in the graphics from the US release?

Wait, if it's in German, isn't it a PAL rom? Don't PAL games usually have multiple language options? There's the possibility the English graphics exist in the rom somewhere.

Of course, I haven't looked at anything myself nor do I intend to, this is just an outside opinion.

The Pokemon games are usually single-language releases. It has been like that since the days of Red and Blue.

Alright...like has been suggested as a possibility, what about copying in the English text? Or are we simply afraid that we'd be overwriting text that was different before the official release?

Man I can't think of anyone that would be willing to help with a German translation. There's a couple mods on SMWC that speak German but I have doubts that they would help out. I'd have to ask SNN if it would be appropriate.

Considering the text is translated into German anyway, I don't think slightly different text is really anything to worry about.

I doubt there's really going to be anything different from the final release. It's just the same game compiled with debug mode on.

Alternative crazy idea: disassemble the game enough that we can move chunks around nicely, insert debug stuff into English version. You'd have to disassemble all three versions (English normal, German normal, German debug) to a text format far enough that you can arbitrarily move and insert things and recompile it into a working ROM, then you can probably just use standard source code patching tools to compile an English debug version...

Text is easy to update, just use a table file and adjust the pointer to it to some blank space. There should be about 5MB of it kicking around in the rom.

Images (unless uncompressed, then it's as simple as YY-CHR) can be changed with UNLZ.

That's really all you need to do. No need to use any of the tools from the pokcommunity, as the language is all you need to update.

(Pointers are stored in reverse, ex 0x123456 = 56341208 as a pointer)

I've heard that but couldn't find the exact place it was released so I could refer to it.
It makes our task a whole lot easier because we can pretty much release the article in the state it is in. It makes it less of a "boom", though it's not likely many people have heard of it yet, so if we manage to do it IN A TIMELY MANNER, we win.

If someone wants to get all the images together I can do a mass import on the main wiki and from there it's fairly trivial to add the article, so...

Well, surprise, they actually are numbers, just odd and angular. The palette isn't really "wrong" per se, but there is an outline on the numbers you can't normally see.
This is viewable by going to VBA's Tools -> Debug menu and choosing Tile Viewer.



The 00 in the top left changes to "01" when you hit the A button, as well.

Well, I'm glad this got sorted out as I'm absolutely against hoarding as well. That being said, should the occasion arise, just copy/paste all the english terms and repoint. its literally that simple. The Gen. 3 Pokemon games are EXTREMELY easy to hack.

I wonder what's with the layout of that menu though. Are there supposed to be labels, or is this supposed to be overlaid on something? Maybe more text that's not visible with this palette?

The outlines kinda support the idea that this was supposed to be shown overtop of some other screen too.
