If the Ribbon is hidden, then it seems like it's pretty much the same thing as a menu bar, only horizontal instead of vertical and with more pictures... (which could be easier to use, I guess?)

I hope the keyboard shortcuts still require you to press control or alt. I don't like the idea of having keyboard shortcuts that are simply "press this alphanumeric key", since I often start typing a filename to jump to it.

On the other hand, Windows 8's explorer looks pretty promising; at least they're listening to us enough to bring back the up button. If you ditch the extremely stupid smartphone part of the OS, Windows 8 looks pretty decent. Though, that could be because Vista was such a departure from XP, NT, 9x, etc..., and 7 was just some tweaks to make it run better, while Windows 8 seems to have a bit of "Ok, what are some of the things people miss from XP?"

Personally, I'd like if Windows's UI weren't so shiny glossy looking. In XP, it looked colorful, solid, and warm. I don't like thinking everything is made out of cold, fragile, fingerprinty glass. :| If they seriously wanted to give their users some serious fanservice, they could bring back the classic Windows look, but with a bit more flare, like stripes on the side of the titlebar, checker patterns like in whistler, that kind of thing, but with the same fundamental Windows Classic structure.

And stop tinting everything blue! Tan is a lot more aesthetic to me.

Heh yeah, I've been sick of shiny glassy blue for a while. You see it a lot in web site designs, and it sucks, but I guess it makes things look "professional" or "businessy". An interface I like is Qt4's "skulpture*. It's clean but still has hard, clear edges, and isn't all glassy or gradienty. Aaaaand, you can change the color, something microsoft's window styles haven't really allowed since windows classic. Microsoft should just replace windows forms with Qt, since I doubt they'll ever get theming right.

Some photos of Windows 8 on ultrabooks.

I'm not all that excited about it. Some of the features are nice, but I hate the new UI. Hopefully they'll have a classic desktop theme that you can use instead of this tablet-esque crap.

Edit: Apparently the new UI is called "Metro" and it's supposed to be the core of Windows 8. There will be a "Pro" UI which is the standard desktop we're used to for PC use. Metro is more for entertainment/touchscreen devices since there won't be separate versions for tablets, phones, ultrabooks, etc.

Yeah, the whole "The Windows 7 UI is right under the Windows 8 one" thing was pretty clear from the beginning.

On that end, I'm actually kind of fond of the W8 tablet interface. It's a lot nicer to look at than iOS's, that's for sure.

Good thing since, there is no reason to downgrade to the new interface on a desktop unit. (Considering most don't have touch screen.)

I like some of the changes, but I doubt I will get it. I Just got a new desktop PC and it shipped with 7. By the time I need a new unit again it would not surprise me if windows "9" is out.

We're not even using Windows 7 here at work yet, just XP. A lot of our software is old and not compatible with it. We're even still using Office 2003 and they're just starting to roll out 2010 for our department next month.

I'm more adjusted to iOS right now, so I'm not a fan of the tiles instead of just app icons. The tiles are more versatile and allow more information, though.

I still use Vista on my Windows machine, but I doubt I'll upgrade it to 8 either. (But maybe I'll have a new one by then?)

I like the idea of Metro, but only being able to use two programs* at once, even on an extremely large screen, seems rather limiting- though I could see it evolving into a tiled window manager, which would be interesting... (and back to Windows 1, lol)

Interesting that they're shipping a built-in antivirus... will Symantec or someone try to put a stop to that via antitrust allegations, I wonder... (I know of course that they already have MSE, but that doesn't ship with the OS)

*-programs using the new UI, of course- maybe or even probably most developers will just keep making Windows classic programs

The first public preview is now available for download.

I'm going to install it on my laptop to play around with it. (Not letting it near my main system yet. )

Or maybe Virtualbox...

I'm still using Windows XP x64. Not even the extra speed can make me upgrade.

However, it is good they allow the user interface for smart people to stay on it.

Why would they get rid of the command line?

Windows's command line, unlike the Linux command line, is more for a masochist. The shell is terrible and it's even worse than bash which is already not that great. Powershell is an improvement except it just runs so slow.

Even though the new UI is still very incomplete, I can't imagine myself ever wanting to use it on anything besides a touchscreen. There's a reason that the desktop UI paradigm has lasted so long. So long as they make a way to completely disable the Metro stuff (I haven't seen an obvious one yet), I'll be happy.

Windows Explorer is now ribbonized like Office? Meh. I suppose you can always minimize the ribbon and add the icons you want to the little toolbar thing.

New task manager, too.

Yeah, it's not the command line which is for smart people. That stuff's just broken.

It's the old fashioned Windows Desktop interface.

I tried the Windows 8 Developer Release and I got this: Sad Face of Death

It didn't start up at all in VMware and gave the SFOD, but it installed in VirtualBox but kept throwing the SFOD (Sad Mac much? That's so 1984 ;P) randomly (either during install, or after, or while running)... I wonder if people got scared of the BSOD with all its cryptic text and numbers

Of course, the Windows Desktop Interface was introduced itself to make things easier to use.

I downloaded the preview and have been trying to install it in a VM, but all I have is an outdated version of Virtual PC so I just get sad-faces in the installer... (same HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED) Of course, I'm not really surprised, given that this is not exactly the situation Microsoft is designing for.

But I have to say, the error message is quite modern-looking!

I'm actually gonna try this on my netbook.

Wish me luck - hopefully it'll be better for me than it's been for others under VMs.

Hell, if nothing else, it's an excuse to drop Ubuntu. It makes me sick as of late, anyway.

So, it's on the netbook.

The desktop works pretty much exactly like Windows 7, but the start button takes you back to the Metro screen. Okay, something new, I'm not going to be too angry. (Hell, 8 even feels a bit speedier than 7 - very welcomed!)

The biggest thing: Metro apps don't open on any screens below 1024x768. Now, many may think "who uses even that anymore", but 1024x600 is a common screen resolution for netbooks... and this pretty much makes 8 worthless on a netbook.

On the plus side, as well... everyone having stability issues? That's a VM issue - 8's been solid on this netbook. Perhaps there are bugs lurking beneath the surface, but yeah... haven't found 'em.

Bleh. Can I just go back to running Linux on this thing and leaving it laying around constantly yet?

(Also, IE 10 seems to have autocorrect. Interesting...)

I actually like the new type of BSOD.

It won't frighten people as much, and even gives a much simpler way to find out what to search for if you're new to it.

Very welcomed.

For those of you interested in running this in a virtual machine, the Windows 8 blog at MSDN has some listed VM software that seems to work. (Of course, all of their suggestions run on Windows- what do you expect? )
