Astronauts' tracks, trash seen in new moon photos

A spacecraft circling the moon has snapped the sharpest photos ever of the tracks and trash left behind by Apollo astronauts in their visits from 1969 to 1972.
Images taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter from 13 to 15 miles up show the astronauts' paths when they walked on the moon, as well as ruts left by a moon buggy. Experts could even identify the backpacks astronauts pitched out of their lunar landers before they returned to Earth.
"What we're seeing is a trail," said Arizona State University geology professor Mark Robinson, the orbiter's chief scientist. "It's totally awesome."

It's really cool to see these photos. I was never a believer in the whole "hoax" theory anyway. People always doubt everything, but having more proof to burst their bubble is always a good thing. You can see the foot paths and the buggy tracks, plus the "trash" that was left behind to reduce weight for lifting back off the moon.

Oh, come on, you know it's easier than ever now to fake pictures. Those prove nothing!

In all seriousness, though, the only thing that would shut up the conspiracy theorists would be images from, say, a Chinese probe that show the same things.

I believe it, and I always have believed it.

Although I'd believe it more if they would just do it again for christ's sake.

They did it once forever ago, and technology is more advanced now.

Land a man on the moon again, and people should understand it happened.

Nah. Conspiracy theorists are forever closed to reality. Not even being punched by a real astronaut will change their mind.

On the other hand, those are some nice space images. Too bad we don't have more moon images like that these days.

There's no such thing as evidence against a conspiracy theory, just evidence that things go even deeper than you thought =o

Seems to me that the USA mostly sent humans to the moon in order to say that they beat the USSR. So with no USSR, there hasn't been that incentive to do all kinds of spacey stuff, I guess

Tsk, we're littering on other planets now?

There's also the fact that we've already done most of what we can do on the moon, as we've already collected moon rocks, we've already placed those reflectors on the moon to trace its movements, and so on.

There's only so much you can do on the moon when colonizing it is a distant possibility. Getting there and back still takes a tremendous amount of effort (and money) as well, so going there is a bit of a waste unless you have something very important to do.

I'd talk about how the Moon isn't a planet, but seeing that we've left a fair amount of junk on Mars at this point, one could say that you're still right.

I had some fun with all the skeptics yesterday, in the comments on that article. There was one with the name "Tired Of The Lies" that did everything he could to say that NASA faked the landings, everything was filmed in the Nevada desert, the "too expensive to return" reason was a ploy, etc, etc. So many people saying things like "Why haven't the tracks been covered up by the dust?" or "Why not just use the Hubble telescope to look at the moon?" Some people just don't have common sense when it comes to certain things.

Dammit!

Do you have any idea how long it'll be now before another Aldrin Punch moment?!

But seriously, I don't think this'll shut up the nutjobs, but that's fine. The conspiracy theories are useful; if someone starts rambling about one, you know you can safely ignore them because they won't have anything worthwhile to say.

Edit: You saw nothing. The wrong phrase was never here. Look at this pen. *flash*

This, especially when combined with NASA's probe technology, is really the reason why. Look at the Mars rovers; those things have literally done so much to advance knowledge about Mars, and they're able to stay there for months and years. The same could be said of the moon; almost anything we could need there could probably be handled by rovers.

Personally, though, I'm more disappointed in the lack of manned space flights; there's a lot of useful experiments and other data that can be run up in space, and it doesn't seem nearly as monumental of a task as landing someone on the moon. But hey, at least we're still getting neat stuff out of it

As for conspiracy theories, I have to agree with the above... It's really just an easy way to know you shouldn't listen to anything they have to say

They were probably just trolling.
